you can find the deficit listed under the "reports" section. to lose 2 pounds a week, we're aiming for a 1,000 calorie deficit each day! good luck! :)

Hi Ladies! I'd like to join, but I realize that I am too late to lose 8 lbs by Oct 1 the healthy way, but I'd like to join here and ask a few q's. How are you deciphering your deficit? Are you taking your "Ideal" daily calorie amount and subtracting your exercise cals and cals not eaten each day to add up to that negative 3500 cals a week to equal loosing one pound?

917 today; it's been a crazy week, which meant no other posts. so far, i've lost 3 pounds... not counting on losing 5 more this week! ;) but i'm thankful for that many and this was still a motivational challenge! thanks, guys!

630 deficit today (not done eating, but have my calories planned out). 3250 total. Almost a pound!

I'm gonna have a really hard time counting next week because I'm going on a business trip and then to a wedding. Not only will it be hard to track, but it will probably not be pretty, calorie-wise. I'll do my best when I'm gone and start counting again from zero when I get back.

I went out for drinks last night, so I'm almost sure I had an overage. I didn't track, though, so I'm just going to give myself the benefit of the doubt and assume it was a small overage. We'll say I'm at a 1400 calorie deficit overall now.

Good news is the scale is finally moving. I didn't really set a clear starting weight for myself (I've been fluctuating a lot), but today I was under 150, which is rare for me. I'd say I've lost at least a pound.

So I had dinner at a restaurant tonight, but I just spent the last couple hours doing some incline walking. I think I ended up with a deficit of around 600.

It's funny... I polished off my plate even though it wasn't that tasty. Trying to walk it off has started to make me realize the "cost" of that food... ugh.

Tomorrow, my goal is to only eat it if it is really good, and I will stop when I'm full!

Almost to 2 pounds now! Cummulative is -6967.
Average since 9/9 is 771. I'm above where I need to be for my reward (new shoes at 750), so I'm hoping that I can create a buffer for the parties the next few weekends.

Broke exactly even today. What are the chances? I'm leaving town for the weekend, so it will be harder to track. Also, my reason for leaving town is that I'm going to 2 bachelorette parties, when I doubt I'll achieve much of a calorie deficit...so maybe I should just start from zero again on Monday...

deficit of 984 today-- hooray!! i'm a little discouraged with the weight loss though... i gained 2 pounds this week and today lost them again. i think that i need to stop weighing myself every day and just keep trying to get the deficit.

I lost track of my cumulative deficit since I didn't track what I ate over the labor day weekend. So I'm going to start fresh. If I average a 600 cal per day deficit, that should add up to 4 lbs from today until october 1st (and 6 lbs total). That's what I'm shooting for.

Three weeks until the 1st. Keep up the good work!

I think that, whether or not you work out, they say you're supposed to eat at least 1200 calories a day.

I also get hungrier when I work out, but I try not to totally cancel out my calories burned with eating! It's hard, though.

Is that ok if we eat under 1000kcal per day? I feel something really strange that if I go to gym everyday, i would eat more than usual, which makes me very difficult to lose weight. but if i don't work out everyday, i definitely eat less than the days i work out, and I actually lose weight. How I have to figure out how to control my appetite when I do work out

188 deficit today. Not bad, since I didn't make it to the gym and I went out to dinner. Unfortunately I might not make it to the gym tomorrow either and I might eat out again! What do ya do...

I also didn't eat the soup I budgeted myself last night, so I'm going to round up and say I'm at a 1060 deficit now. Not nearly where I want to be, but at least I'm not going over!

And Loren, I don't think not hitting 8lbs counts as "giving up." I think if you hit 7 or 6 or even less it's a success! You can always lose more later!

OK, I am pretty much sure I'm not going to hit 8 lb. I hate giving up, since I lose motivation. I skipped my lifting workout today but managed enough cardio to hit a deficit. I still should have done the lifting, since I've got a work thing tomorrow night and probably won't have much of a deficit. I just didn't want to, though.

Yikes. Labor day weekend was really rough! I went to my parents' house where I was sufficiently fattened up with homemade food and even a beer festival! I didn't even track what I ate, but I think I negated most of my progress... I'm back now, but I'm not sure I'll end up making the 8lbs. But again, progress is progress, even if it's not as quick as I'd like.

Finally! An 823 calorie deficit! It's not 8pm yet, so there's still time for me to mess up, but I already budgeted for a cup of soup and then I have to make myself STOP.

Unfortunately my reason for being successful today is that, because it's a holiday, I spent the whole day working out and napping! I can't necessarily work out this much every day, and I also can't nap every day. (The great thing about a nap is that you can't eat while you're napping! Whereas at my desk at work I can eat a LOT if I let myself!)

I took a few steps backward this weekend.
Cummulative calorie deficit: -2013 / 28 000

If I want to hit 8 lb, I need to have a deficit over 1000 calories every day. I don't think that this is going to happen, but I'm going to shoot for a close as I can get!

Well I went a few hundred calories over AGAIN yesterday, so basically my deficit for the week is zero. That's too bad because I really was trying this week (as opposed to last week, when I knew I was being bad). But the good thing is that I can see in black and white where I'm going wrong! Important first step in turning this around!

Important second step will be actually having a calorie deficit today! Off for a jog...

a deficit of 1471 yesterday, thanks to a swing dance ariels workshop. but due to the same workshop, i can't really move today! :o) tonight is date night with my man, so i should probably go exercise a bit before we go out for a fancy dinner! it's so helpful to have some accountability and to actually look at the deficit each day, not just the calories I take in!

I was 327 over yesterday. (Stupid drinks! Weekends are hard!) I went out for lunch, dinner, and for drinks, though, so I suppose it could have been worse. I also remembered something I ate Friday that I forgot to track. So I think my total deficit is only about 300 now.

Again, EMBARRASSING that according to this I've probably lost about .1 lb, but it's really helpful for me to see this in writing! I bet if I weren't counting like this I would have gone MORE ever yesterday.

I'm going to 2 parties today. I'm not sure aiming for a deficit today is realistic but I'm going to aim not to go over.

Today my deficit was only 62, dang it! I had a big lunch and then in the evening I had a couple drinks. I also did a pretty weak workout.

So...Total deficit is 464 for now. Slow and steady!

Loren, I think you may have missed a day in your cumulative deficit... You average more than me every day, and I think your total is probably a good bit higher than mine. You might be closer to the 2lb mark than you think!

Welcome to everyone who is new to the challenge! It's great to have lots of people doing the same thing... it certainly helps keep me motivated and accountable! Some of us are keeping track of our daily calorie differential, though you're welcome to keep track however you see fit. Just keep everyone posted, I guess.

I was a little worried when I weighed myself this morning since I didn't do so well over the weekend. But I lost 2 pounds since last week! Yay!

cumulative deficit: 2226/28000 (as of monday). Not quite up to speed with what I'd hoped for, but at least it's progress!

I am actually a couple pounds heavier than last week. I'm hoping it's all water weight... I typically bloat a lot around this time of the month (sorry if that's TMI).

I'm planning to do a long run tomorrow morning so that I don't have to worry so much about the food at a wedding in the evening.

I personally doubt I'll be able to pull off the 750, but if I can achieve ANY deficit and lose ANY amount of weight I'll be happy even if it's not the full 8 lbs!

Again, I'm starting this more earnestly Monday. I'll be back... In the meantime, I'll try not to overdo it TOO much this weekend (though I doubt I'll achieve any deficits).

Hey girls, I'm down! My 29th birthday is Sept. 30 and I was hoping to lose about 8 pounds by then anyway so this is perfect. Like Loren009 I run and am currently training for a half-marathon which is in two weeks so getting that deficit is actually pretty easy for me when you're logging 3-11 mile runs 4-5 days a week. I also like to go on long bike rides on my cross training days and I lift 3 days a week. Loren009 I also understand the high-cal overeating episodes - I do that too when I've gone too long without eating, so I've been working on trying to eat smaller meals or snacks every 3 hours and when I do I feel so much better physically and have more energy. Another issue I have is cake and cookies and I've discovered food from Vitalicious. They have muffins, muffin tops, brownies and each kind only has 100 calories! I just have one with some light Cool whip and some fruit and it's so yummy. Something you girls might want to try if you like the cake and cookies like I do.

I can hit 700-something by eating 1200-1400 and running 5 miles. I'm lifting (circuit type) three days a week also.

My biggest problem is having some majorly high-cal over-eating episodes... I am going to try to avoid those this weekend.

Just out of curiosity what are people doing to get 750 cal defecits? How much excersice and what does your food for the day look like.. becauase i've been running like crazy and watching what i eat and 750cal is quite a bit more than i expected...

Ah. Got it.
My cumulative deficit (for the past 3 days) is 1528/28000. Looks like at this average rate I won't make the 8lbs. I don't want to skimp on calories eaten, so this will give me incentive to get in some extra cardio!

There are formulas to calculate how much your body burns in a day, but I just use one of the Spark reports. In the "My Tools" menu, click "Reports", and go to "Daily Calorie Differential" on the second line.

Tomorrow's goal: deficit in range of 770-1200

Great! I'm so glad you guys are in on this too. I hadn't quite figured out the best way to maintain accountability... I think weekly weigh-in posts are good, but maybe we could also include tips, ideas, etc. even more frequently than once a week. How do people feel about daily (or however often you want) posts about whether you stayed in your calorie range, got exercise, drank enough water, etc.?

Today I did pretty well staying within my ranges (though I can never seem to get enough protein). No exercise though... I really need to concentrate on getting back in shape!

This sounds like a great challenge! I'm in an October wedding, so I shouldn't need any extra motivation... but I haven't quite gotten there.

8 pounds is a 28,000 calorie deficit. Counting today but not Oct.1, there are 37 days to hit it. This means I need to have an average daily deficit of 757 calories. I think I'll post my daily and cummulative deficit here to keep me accountable. Is that OK?

I'm in! I don't think I can do the whole 8 that fast, but I'd like to get as close to that as possible.

Today I weighed 155, but I think that's a fluke. We'll say my starting weight is 151 and my eventual goal weight is 139. I think 147 is a realistic goal for me by Oct 1.

Hello everyone! I'm just returning to Spark People after falling off the bandwagon for a while. Last year I used this site to lose over 15 lbs and get into pretty good shape. Over the summer I gained some back and got pretty lazy, and I think it's time to get back on board. To start things off right, I thought I'd challenge myself to lose 8 lbs by October. That's about 1.5 lbs a week, so it seems pretty do-able. I'd love to have some people join this challenge, because it's always so much better when other people are doing it with you.
