Just finished the next Sigma Force novel by James Rollins, Demon Crown: oh my goodness! emoticon Totally edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting adventure featuring ecological disaster, history concerning the founder of the Smithsonian, with action in Hawaii, Japan, the Baltic area of the ancient Amber Road. Not only are his books intelligent and thrilling, but his characters are multi-dimensional. Or as I would tell female readers in my old bookstore managing days, "He writes like a woman": his characters grow and evolve and have emotional lives, in addition to saving the world repeatedly. Even the villains are richly drawn. I recommend him highly, though it helps to start with his early novels, with Sandstorm introducing the Sigma Force series, although some earlier works introduce characters that show up in the series.

I haven't read that in a long time. I remember being very thankful that I was warned it starts out very slowly. As I recall, the first 75 pages were pretty boring, but the next 500 were really good!

The Thing About Jellyfish was an excellent book, though very sad. Just finished a totally different novel--one of James Rollins' intelligent action thrillers in the Sigma series, The Seventh Plague. Global warming, biblical plagues, mummification, with action in the Canadian arctic near Greenland as well as in Sudan and Rwanda. There are cameos by Mark Twain, Dr. Livingstone and the inventor Tesla, as well as the return of a character from Sandstorm, the novel that introduced Painter Crowe, the head of Sigma. A total thrill ride, with characters you care about. That was mine from 2016, but never read. Now I have a couple more in the series from the library.

I'm making a note for Miss B's book box this Christmas.

I'm currently re-reading The Mists of Avalon. It's been a LONG time since I've read this one. I have a pile of "to reads" but this just struck my mood.

I'm more than halfway through The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin, who wrote that zany The Next Great Paulie Fink. This also features a middle school protagonist, but it is heartbreaking as she deals with friendship and its loss, grief, and not fitting in. She's smart, and knows a lot about many things, including jellyfish. Highly recommended.

When we got together for our trip, Mary and I exchanged library books. I leant her One Hundred Names and The Next Great Paulie Fink, a delightful juvenile fiction book. She loaned me 2 paranormal anthologies. There were a couple authors I really enjoyed in one of those, so I started a new Word document listing the authors and which stories they wrote, so I can look for other books by them. That's how I discovered my beloved Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, from such an anthology, Wolfsbane and Mistletoe, about werewolves and Christmas.

Now I'm reading a new anthology from my library, Parallel Worlds: The Heroes Within. I'm adding to my list, and just reserved a book by one of the authors, D.H. Butler, who has a "flintlock fantasy" series set in an alternate Old West. Looking forward to checking that out.

There's a new No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency novel out, so I'm rereading the last few. Just finished The House of Unexpected Sisters. So lovely!

I enjoy the gentle humor and musings on life. Like Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni thinking about how older cars have souls, making mechanics like him priests of a sort, but how the new computerized ones don't seem to have a soul. "There was no point in bemoaning these things, because you could find yourself shaking your head so much that you would end up with a sore neck."

Or Mma Ramotswe explaining to her friend Mma Potokwane that her beloved but slow little white van had been passed by bicycles going uphill and once by a donkey. But this didn't bother her. "What does it matter if you take two hours to do a journey that everybody else takes one hour to do? What does it matter, Mma?" To which her friend replied, "You're quite right, Mma Ramotswe. Where's the rush? The places we're going to will still be there when we arrive I don't see any reason to hurry."

I just started a new juvenile novel, The Next Great Paulie Fink, by Ali Benjamin. I'm loving it! So fresh and strange, humorous, engaging, original. Will have to reserve his debut novel The Thing About Jellyfish.

Funnies (they made me laugh, anyway) from the latest Soulwood Novel, Spells for the Dead by Faith Hunter, which features Nell who grew up in a polygamist church cult in rural Tennessee who is now an agent for a Federal paranormal agency. (One of her unit members sometimes calls her "country hick chick.")

"Maybe it was the fact that I'd only eaten donuts, coffee, and my protein bars all day, but I was pretty sure this was the best pizza I had ever eaten. Maybe the best meal I had ever eaten. In my life."

"I was thinking like a townie woman, modern and self-sufficient and sneaky. And it was about dang time."

"I dawdled. I dillydallied. I might have loitered."

"... I was irked. Very irked. Maybe even riled. Because I thought I had hidden it so well."

"I got my eyes open and blinked, confused. I was at HQ. I didn't remember getting here.
"Nell?" FireWind [her boss's boss] asked. He had used my first name. That was enough to wake the dead from sheer shock."

Read a delightful book, but be warned, I almost gave up before it got really good. One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern. I didn't like the protagonist much to start, but she definitely becomes a better person through meeting some of the 100 names on a list. It's odd, with interesting characters, and I was crying and laughing near the end. Highly recommended.

Yes, still rereading the Patty Briggs books--and annotating characters, events and quotes from the stories and novels.

I watched a YouTube clip from the managing artistic director of the Lakewood Playhouse with news on how the latest governor's decree is affecting the current season and their summer classes for kids. I hadn't planned to watch anything else, but a 25 year reunion of the Pretty Woman cast on Today caught my eye.

It was delightful, as was the 20 years later reflection by Julia and Richard on Runaway Bride--another favorite rom com of mine.

Next book in Earth's Children series by Jean M. Auel (Clan of the Cave Bear was first, I read it ages ago) the 2nd: Valley of the Horses. I was organizing some space in the basement, and had set these aside for 'someday'—my sister had left them behind—and I decided someday had arrived. Reading slowly, not even a chapter a night, at bedtime, but it's weaning me off having a screen or 3 on right as I fall asleep.

I just started reading [*Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers: The Secrets of Ancient Fermentation* by Stephen Harrod Buhner][1]. A great book on the intersection of herbalism and fermentation. Another book by the same author is on hold at the library for me, *[Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm: Beyond the Doors of Perception into the Dreaming of Earth][2]*

[*The Goblin Emperor*][3] by Katherine Addison was good--lots of courtly intrigue as the young emperor changes the world and learns to trust his instincts. I am looking forward to the sequels.

Also enjoyable: [*The White Magic Five and Dime*][4] By Steve Hockensmith and Lisa Falco. I don't usually read mysteries, but this one drew me in with its great character studies, humor, unexpected plot twists and spot-on tarot readings.

[*Shades of Milk and Honey*][5] by Mary Robinette Kowal portrays a Austenesque heroine who saves her sister from a cad and finds unlikely love while learning how to weave magic in a Regency-era setting. I recommend it to anyone who likes Austen and the era she wrote in.

I am in the middle of [*The Hazel Wood*][6] by Melissa Albert. It is a YA book that is basically a mystery based on fairytale themes with a smidgeon of horror. It takes place in New York and the author throws in lots of literary references. Readers might appreciate its maiden/mother/crone aspect or the intergenerational trauma and rescue scenario.

I'm sort of saving my books, so this weekend, since finishing Roomies, I've spent my "reading time" at home watching the DVD Toy Story set I got myself for my birthday. I love that these Blu Ray discs have the original DVD features, plus new ones as well. I just finished TS3--I forgot how much it made me cry at the end. I sort of remembered the sad ones in the incinerator, but didn't recall the bittersweet ones when Andy leaves for college. Looking forward to the special features tomorrow night, then Tuesday I buy the brand new Patricia Briggs on release day!

I finished my bus/work book, The Case of the Wandering Scholar, with the lady detective in Victorian England. Mildly entertaining, not bad, just not especially compelling. I prefer stories where I care deeply about the characters, like the one I'm rereading now by Heather Webber, or my favorite urban fantasy series. Characters don't even have to be human for me to care about them and want to know what will happen next in their lives. I'm a whole week away from the new Mercy Thompson release. I can't wait!!

I discovered Heather Webber (who as Heather Blake has written 2 mystery series with magical elements) had a new book out in 2019, Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe. I got it from the library and finished it today. I simply loved it. Set in a little town in Alabama, it's her first women's fiction book. The characters are wonderful--I really want to read more about them, so I hope she'll write more books in this setting. All sorts of family secrets and struggles and emotional issues, with a tiny bit of magic tossed in. I may buy it in hardcover to read over. I'll probably reread it before returning it to the library. It was SO satisfying!

I'm just sorry that Midnight without a Moon fizzled out at the end. So many things kept happening, with lots of intensity & emotions, and tense historical events--and then it just sort of stopped with the main character changing her mind about what action to take--but without any action taking place. It was odd and disappointing after such powerful feelings had been stirred.

Last night I finished my subsequent bus/work book, The House by Christina Lauren--a really creepy gothic (but modern) YA novel. There was a bit of a lull in the middle, but then it got really scary by the end. A good read if you like spooky.

I'm about to finish Silence Fallen, 2 Mercy Thompson novels back in preparation for the release of her next one on 3/17. This one has her kidnapped from the Tri-Cities in Washington state and taken to Milan by a powerful vampire. In escaping his stronghold, she causes the werewolf chasing her to be run over by a bus. She's a coyote shapeshifter, a daughter of Coyote, so odd things are always happening around her. She's also a VW mechanic and married to an alpha werewolf. She ends up in Prague, where she meets up & interacts with the legendary Golem of Prague. It's a favorite installment of mine in the urban fantasy series that begins with Moon Called.

I gave up on my last book--boring!--so I was hoping my next book would be better . . . and it's amazing! A juvenile fiction book--that I consider more YA, with a 13-year-old protagonist: a black girl living in Mississippi in 1955. The conditions are heartbreaking, but she is so matter-of-fact about it. I'm just a little ways into it, but extremely compelling! Oh, the title is Midnight Without a Moon, by Linda Williams Jackson. It's a glorious debut novel!

Finished my bus and work book, Ice Dogs, by Terry Lynn Johnson. Really good, about a young teen girl musher in Alaska who finds an injured city boy while out with her dog team, and they get lost and have many hair-raising adventures trying to get home. Very intense and exciting!

I absolutely LOVED The Unteachables by Gordon Korman! It's not only about a group of misfit students, but also a burnt out teacher trying to skate out the year until early retirement who gets assigned to them. I almost missed my bus stop yesterday afternoon, because I was at a very tense section. Two mornings in a row, it had me laughing so loud, I may have disturbed coworkers. And I had to wipe away the tears when I finished it this morning just before my shift started. I *highly* recommend this one!

I've had a pleasant surprise with an anthology I requested. Actually I'm the one who suggested the purchase, since my system had no copies. Faith Hunter's newest short story was in something called The Death of All Things, edited by Gilman and Richardson. Writers from many genres, and mostly not well known, take different perspectives on Death as a character. I've only read a couple of duds & gave up on one, but I've laughed and teared up and thought "now that's strange!" And a few authors I enjoyed enough to search for other titles to read. [from yesterday, copied from another team]

I finished Death of All Things, and in the last few had a heartbreaking and rather depressing story, and very the last was heartbreaking, yet uplifting--reminded me a little of Touched by an Angel. The author of that story, Delayed Exchange Deferred, is Kiya Nicoll.
www.immanion-press.com/kiya-
nicoll

Wedding Vows, by Leah Cutter, about a ghost in contemporary China, was sweet and had me tearing up. And The Wolves of Lady Death, by Christie Golden, was so moving it made me cry.

I love storytelling that creates characters you care deeply about and enjoy watching them grow, struggle, evolve, and triumph. I've discussed Nora's latest trilogy and what I love about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which I just finished, in the chat thread. And now I've returned to the last 3 books by Faith Hunter. In Dark Queen, Jane Yellowrock has met her brother, another skinwalker who was born on the Trail of Tears after she was forced to change into a bobcat and left in the snow to escape the soldiers--as a child of 5.

Just barely began another library impulse display, which will be my bus and work book this week: The Curious Heart of Ailsa Rae by Stephanie Butland, about a young woman who gets a heart transplant. I only read a few pages while in line at the store today, and I think I'm going to really enjoy it. More to come . . .

I've restarted my Harry Potters, about 3/4 through #1, The Sorcerer's Stone. Such fun! emoticon

Roseflower Creek is one of my favorites. It's sad. Have your tissues ready.

It's written from the prospective of Lori Jean, a child from rural Alabama the 1930's. It's heavy on dialect.

Trigger Warning: Lori Jean and her mother suffer physical abuse from the mother's husband. It also deals with coat hanger abortions, as it would have been understood by a 9-10 year old child of the era. I personally mourned heavily with Lori Jean over her aborted sibling.

This Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. Corrwin Goodwin is lead on adventure through her family's past when she finds a 17th century Bible in her late grandmother's house. The Bible contained a scrap of paper with the Name Deliverance Dane. Corrwin begins to research the name and finds she is descended from Deliverance, a woman accused of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials.

It meshes a modern witches prospective well with the discoveries of the past. It's important to note that this story is rooted in Howe's own family history. She is the decent of both Elizabeth Proctor and Elizabeth Howe, women accused of witchcraft in the Salem witch trials. I think that's part of the reason the story is so captivating.

Started a new book on the bus today: Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert, who has written interracial romances prior to this chick lit book. It is absolutely delightful, I giggled through most of my bus ride home. emoticon Helen Hwang, who wrote The Kiss Quotient and The Bride Test has a testimonial quote on the front cover, which is unfortunately covered up by the library barcode. I highly recommend it.

Just wanted to share a quote I enjoyed from Circle of the Moon, the newest Soulwood novel by Faith Hunter, set in the Jane Yellowrock universe. It's a conversation between the main character Nell (a twenty-something magical being with plant and earth affinities, who escaped a polygamous cult at age 12) to her younger sister Mindy (12 or 13, same magical potential, still in the cult), of whom Nell is seeking custody.
"That's very Machiavellian of you, sister mine."
"That sounds like a dirty word, but if'n I get a greenhouse outta that, then I'm okay with it."

Nora Roberts' next book, The Rise of Magicks, comes out on November 26--Tuesday. I finished rereading the first book in the trilogy, Year One (very reminiscent of Stephen King's The Stand) this morning, and began the second book, Blood and Bone. Hoping to finish it Monday night, then I will pick up the brand new one Tuesday after work. This is not a romance series, but a moving tale of people, magical and "muggles," who struggle to rebuild after a plague, fighting both magical and non-magical forces of evil. Strong stuff, strong characters--excellent reading!

I will see if I can get Pratchett's The Hogfather. Thanks for the tip, Paula.

I was so impressed with Out of My Mind, Eva. Hope you like it!

I've been enjoying reading one book or series at home, then a different one at work and on the bus. A recent cute one from my library impulse display ('Choice Reads') was Love at First Like. Featured a twenty-something in New York who built her business largely through social media, so it was a culture I'm not familiar with, but it was light and fun. Oh, the author was Hannah Orenstein.

I finished the final Soulwood novel last night--there was so much I had forgotten! I read all the Jane Yellowrock short stories and novels, and I'm still #23 in line, though they just got their 2nd order in and processed. They had first order 6 or 8, but when they got over 30 requests, they added the other number for a total of 14, but the second group hadn't arrived. So it could be a while yet.

I checked on the release of the 3rd Nora Roberts novel in her Chronicles of the One series, her first anthology released in hardcover, and it's coming out 11/26. So I'll start book #1, Year One, tonight. They came out a full year apart, not usual for her series, so I definitely want to remember all that happened before reading the new--and I think final--one in the series.

I am reading Lake Ephemeral by Anya Allyn it is a mystery/scifi,/adventure.

Lake Ephemeral is unique it has 7 mansions surrounding the lake, and no one exepct the gardener and one other person is allowed enter it.

Seraphin is an orphan or thought she was when at age 11 she learns her Mother is alive and at Lake Ephemeral.
Accidentally Seraphin discovers something terrifying about what is inside the seventh manor.
Her life is changed by what she learns and soon finds herself in the middle of secret and no way of returning to the world outside the Lake as no one is allowed to leave.

The secret of the six other mansions and the other children who live there becomes clear and Seraphin embarks on a journey that will answer all her questions and create new ones.
Fast paced and a really good read, I can't wait to find out what happens next.

REVEIW
This is a mix of mystery, adventure and science fiction. A really well written story that gently leads you into the tale.
The mystery of the lake is revealed as are the significance of the mansions. A touching tale in many ways and the way it unfolds makes you want to know what happens next.
The children have been part of an experiment that has more than one aspect to it.
The end of the tale is really good and leaves with only little cliffhanger that could be a new book or just leaves it to the readers imagination.
If you like mystery and science fiction give it a go you will not be disappointed, nothing too taxing just a good tale that keeps you guessing.

It is YA so language is not an issue, I dislike some books that use strong language to a large extent. I am not a prude I just don't see why some authors insist of peppering their books with such language when it is not needed.

Onto The Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

I read this in plenty of time for Yule each year as I like to read a few seasonal based tales before December 21st.
I read this every year and find something new each time. I also watch the film every year, but the book naturally contains far more and is such a good read.

I've borrowed a book from Brenna, sent to her by an adopted Auntie. Sharron Draper's Out of My Mind. I find I'm really enjoying it. I've recommended it to a couple of friends and they intend to find it.

I started a new book today by Abbi Waxman, The Garden of Small Beginnings, and I love it. I was laughing out loud on the first page, and several times at work and on the bus, had a hard time stopping the giggles, where it got hard to read the words through the tears. Highly recommended!

I finished the brand new hardcover (her first; the other 3 were trade paperbacks) by Jasmine Guillory, Royal Holiday. It focuses on Maddie's mom, Vivian Forest, whom we met as a minor character in the last book. It was sweet and less steamy, following the holiday romance of two fifty-somethings.

I read Fumbled by Alexa Martin some weeks ago, and just finished her first book, Intercepted, this evening. It's another romance involving NFL players. The author was an NFL wife for 8 years. Her 3rd book, Blitzed, is on order. I like that she has cover quotes by two other recent discoveries, Jasmine Guillory and Helen Hoang.

Next up for bus and work is Jasmine's brand new Royal Holiday--her first in hardcover--featuring the mother of her last book's romantic lead. So looking forward to it.

At home, I'm on the last short story/novella in the Jane Yellowrock anthology Blood in Her Veins. Then comes novel #10. I'm having *so* much fun rereading these!

Speaking of being in line for a book . . . I just found out my library system ordered 6 more of the new Jane Yellowrock book, so instead of being 34 of 8, I'm 34 of 14 to be ordered! I enjoyed the Renee Watson juvenile book, Some Places More Than Others, about an Oregon girl who goes to New York City with her dad and meets relatives for the first time. It was good, though not as compelling as her recent YA novels to me. I liked her lists at the end, including top 10 places to visit in Oregon and NYC.

I gave up on Double Dutch by Sharon Draper--just wasn't holding my interest. But I am *loving* the YA novel my sister found, from a list at her library, about a Persian teen who gets into breakdancing and has to deal with a bunch of anti-Islamic prejudice at her new high school. It's called A Very Large Expanse of Sea, by Tahereh Mafi. She's written a bunch more books; I don't know if they are all for young adults, or all about Muslim youth. I'll check at least some of them out after I finish this one.

I absolutely adored this book, and just requested her earlier 2 novels. I'm lucky I found this on the Choice Reads display, since the regular copies are all spoken for! There were copies available for the other two--The Garden of Small Beginnings and Other People's Houses, but a waiting list for the new one, The Bookish Life of Nina Hill: 128 people in line for 47 copies!

I reread the awesome trio of books by Jasmine Guillery--The Wedding Date, The Proposal, and The Wedding Party--just love them!

Now I'm giggling my way through the absolutely charming The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman. An unusual, social awkward, very intelligent heroine. I'm enjoying it immensely!

I stayed up to finish a sweet juvenile fiction book, Three Pennies, by Melanie Crowder. It's about a girl in foster care who was abandoned by her mother, but is determined to find her. There are also brief chapters told from the POV of an owl. Unusual and touching.

I had been thinking I might reread the extensive Jane Yellowrock series, and just requested the first 2 books plus the short story collection. Then I checked the author's website (Faith Hunter), and found out the next Jane book is coming out on Oct. 29, 2019! The last one ended with lots of upheaval and big changes after a huge battle with the European vampires, so it will be good to be reminded of all the details and relationships leading up. It's fun to dive back in and be reacquainted with a fascinating and well-wrought universe.

Reading a really funny juvenile fiction book, Louisiana's Way Home, by Kate DiCamillo. A very fast read with a hoot of a heroine with a decided point of view & voice, and lots of dramatics and hyperbole. It had me laughing in the break room and on the bus.

Read a silly little kids book, Obi, Gerbil on the Loose by Michael Delaney. I've requested the other two Obi books from the library.

Read Lost and Found Sisters by Jill Shalvis--quite enjoyable. There's a quote on the front jacket by Susan Mallery, whose books I enjoy a lot: "She's my go-to read for humor and heart." Then a novella that follows 2 teens from that book 10 years later, The Good Luck Sister. Fun. Next up is Rainy Day Friends, by her, set in the same town of Wildstone. The most recent of those was The Lemon Sisters, which I found on the Quick Reads display at the library.

Another wonderful book by Renee Watson--her first, I think--What Momma Left Me. Often sad, but gently so. And how I enjoyed the teen heroine's poetry assignments for class.

I was up well past midnight finishing This Side of Home, and I started her juvenile fictionalized biography, Betty Before X, which she wrote with the daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz. Being written for young readers, it's going even faster, and I'll definitely finish it today. What a gifted writer Renee Watson is!

I can't stop reading this excellent YA novel, This Side of Home by Renee Watson. I started it today, and am almost finished. Her prose just flows and pulls you in. I respect and empathize with the main character, Maya.

I finished The Wedding Party at our last hotel, so Mary could return her library book on time--yay! Now I'll return to Alesha at Last. I did want to mention two young children's picture books I enjoyed that were written by Renee Watson (the author of Piecing Me Together, with different illustrators in completely different styles)--A Place Where Hurricanes Happen, and Harlem's Little Blackbird: The Story of Florence Mills.

Mary's library system got a brand new book in faster than mine did. She already read it and brought it this weekend so I could read it. I'm over half way and it's delightful. The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory who wrote The Wedding Date and The Proposal, with some of the same characters. Really sexy and fun.

Started another Choice Reads (what I refer to as the impulse display) book I picked up: Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin. I'm loving it! The back cover describes it as "A modern-day Muslim Pride and Prejudice." It moves well, good humor, a likeable heroine, and deals frankly with prejudice of various kinds, ethnic and sexual politics. Like her characters, the author is part of the Toronto Muslim community. I'm learning a lot--and having fun!

I enjoyed the trilogy, but was disappointed in the latest book focusing on Marcus.

Read The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, who wrote The Bride Test, about another "neuro-atypical" (high-functioning autistic) protagonist struggling & learning about sex and relationships. Very enjoyable, but be warned the sex is quite graphic!

Very different impulse read was the award winning "illustrated memoir"--a mature graphic novel-style autobiography by Thi Bui about escaping Vietnam and learning her parents' histories, being a refugee and becoming a parent herself. Fascinating & disturbing. Oh, the title is The Best We Could Do.

Now reading an awesome YA novel, Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson, about a black girl from the Portland projects who gets into an exclusive private high school, and joins a mentor program. She's an artist who does collage, who appreciates opportunities she's being given, but gets tired of being seen as someone who needs to be fixed. Poignant and rather lyrical in style. Can't wait to try others by this author. This is a Newberry Honor Book.

I just finished reading A Discovery of Witches, and have started the second in the series. Loving the characters, the feisty witch who is the heroine especially.

Just finished another impulse read from the library display: The Bride Test by Helen Hoang. A wealthy Vietnamese American goes to Vietnam to find a prospective bride for her autistic son. Very powerful and appealing. I liked the characters so very much. Can't wait to try her first book, The Kiss Quotient, which according to the bio blurb in the back was inspired by her journey. "In 2016, she was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in line with what was previously known as Asperger's syndrome."

Loving my rereading of Susan Mallery's When We Found Home about 3 half-siblings, all offspring of a now deceased irresponsible philanderer, and how they create a new family.

I finished Sharon Draper's Fire from the Rock, a fictional novel taking place in Little Rock in 1957 when Central High School was integrated by federal law, adamantly protested by the governor of Arkansas and white racists. The historical details were so rich, and the human stories so heartbreaking. An excellent book!
