Buying Pears

Look for: pears that are firm without bruises or spots. Pears are ripe when the skin near the stem yields to gentle pressure.

Avoid: soft pears with bruises and blemishes.

Seasonality: Fall and winter

Storing Pears

Store at room temperature until ripe, up to 1 week. To speed ripening, place in a paper bag. Refrigerate ripe pears up to 3 days.

Preparing Pears

Wash pears just before eating or cooking.
