I try my best to always eat the very best "type" of a food - so if I crave something I try to never settle for a mediocre sample. I find that I need less of a particular food if I take the time to find the healthiest, best version. Sometimes I actually crave "junk food" but that's okay - I give in at times and really enjoy it. But it's the majority of the foods I put into my mouth where I seek out the best.
I also avoid "fake" versions of foods - like I would NEVER eat fat-free mayonnaise or artificially flavored or sweetened cereals, yogurts or sodas. If I'm going to have something I want the "real McCoy" or I just don't eat it. I am certain that it's one of the reasons I don't overdo it nearly as often as when I tried to "lighten up" my food choices by choosing fake versions.
Lastly, I've become conscious of the gross travesty that is industrial farming and animal production and I have pledged to seek out the local, humane and organic versions of the foods I love. I feel better about what I am putting inside of me - more conscious, more deliberate in my choices.
So that's basically it - choose the best, tastiest, and healthiest version of whatever I eat and stay away from overly-processed or artificially enhanced versions of food. Remain aware of where my food comes from and what it took to bring it to my table... and always, always savor the food by not wolfing it down mindlessly while doing something else or feeling rushed for time. I know there are great recipes that "lighten up" foods by choosing alternate but still natural and healthy ingredients so I leave that option open as well.
I am okay with a lower fat or sodium content as long as it doesn't warrant using additives that simply don't belong in a particular food.
