Play Pickleball (or Any Other Sport That Fits Your Physical Abilities)



I was not raised with sports. But, upon retiring, I discovered pickleball, which is played mainly by older adults. I quickly took to pickleball and began playing several times a week.

Previous to pickleball, exercise was exercise: walking, running, strength training. I could not help but watch the clock while exercising.

Now, when playing pickleball, I am so absorbed in the fun, camaraderie and competition, that time flies by and I'm not even thinking about strength or cardio. However, strength and cardio are exactly what I am getting, particularly cardio. And I am getting cardio in much higher doses than I used to in running and walking. My fitbit confirms this. And I have now been doing this regularly for almost four years without stop.

So, my advice, or secret of success is this: find a sport, it doesn't have to be pickleball. Find one that is played by people like you, people at your age with roughly your physical abilities. You can find these things online, at community centers, senior centers, parks and recreation, etc.

Find a way to begin that is most comfortable for you. For me, I found a class that introduced pickleball. But others have started more directly, showing up at drop-in pickleball events and introducing themselves to friendly players. Again, look for opportunities at your local centers. There are even commercial venues for pickleball and other recreational sports that cater to beginners. They are motivated to cultivate new customers!

When starting, respect your body and begin gradually. I was having so much fun when I started pickleball that I over did it a little and pulled an abductor muscle! I had to sit out for two months and do physical therapy.
