My weight loss journey begins now, APRIL 2006

Not only do I need to lose weight, I need to get in shape!

I haven't accomplish much in life expect for my family, which I am very proud of.
I didn't go to college because I married right out of high school.
The only thing that I accomplished on my own in adult life is earning my degree in the Martial Arts.

At this time I am wanting to become centered on my goals, get my weight off and get back into shape before I lose ALL my skills and abilities in the arts.

My story in the arts.. I enrolled my son in karate on his 6th birthday. I watched hin in class for 2 years and I became very comfortable with everyone and the rules of the dojo. Then a womens self-defense class was offered for a full day. I took my 2 daughters with me and we did the class. I decided I could do this and would like to... so I signed up for karate classes and went with my son. I can say it was a wonderful experience for us both. We did classes together for the next 6 years. The rules of our system, he could not receive his Dan rank until the age of 12 which he did and went on to receive rank in other systems in our dojo. My story ends when I turned 50. I took another path in my life. I choose friendship with my girlfriends and didn't feel karate needed to be in my life because of my age and lifestyle changes.
I think about every 10 years or so I must like change. Because I choose to join the YMCA last Feburary 07 and get back into exercise. I had gained about 30-40 pounds. I am now beginning to feel more fit and I'm beginning to think about the arts again. How much I enjoyed it and how much it changed my life. So, one of these days I might just slip into my gi, tie my belt and have that feeling of being invincible, one last time.

I am hoping to meet some people who will motivate me into getting back into the Martial Arts... Is that possible? Will I ever go back to a dojo again??? That's the BIG QUESTION

My linage in the Arts...

Started in 1992... it took me 6 years to earn my black belt in Hawaii Kempo. This style is similar to Okinawan Kenpo. I've been told by my sensi that once we reach 1st Dan in our system our skill level would be equivalent to a 3rd degree dan rank in most other systems. I just brought up this point since it seems like such a long time to be taking classes to reach Dan level in our system. Our color belts run white, yellow, blue, green, purple, 3 brown levels then black. In order to move up in rank there were many other requirements besides karate. A lot of other 'Art' was involved. Including Darma talks, volunteer services, instructing so many hours of karate, projects to complete before each belt test (which became more involved and harder as higher levels were achieved), and we were required to carry current CPR and First Aid class requirements. So needless to say, Karate is just a part of our Martial Arts system. Once we reach Dan rank in our system we are very qualified to do so much more in life then when we put on a karate belt for the first time.
This is why I always tell people ... Taking martial arts is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself and those you love.

Peace in your life,

My Goals:
I need to lose weight and get in shape. Age is creeping up on me and if I don't turn around soon I'm sure it will be impossible to ever teach in the arts again.

My Program:
I am counting calories, beginning to move more and hopefully get motivated enough to get back into karate. Sometimes I think I am crazy for wanting to do this as I'm looking at 60 years of age. But I know if I get into great shape, I can still do this!

My activities...
Walk and hour each morning
Step Aerobics 3x a wk
WaterWalking 3x a wk
Weight Training 2-3x a wk
now if I would just add Karate into my daily routine ... I wonder.. when will I have time for anything else? LOL

Personal Information:
I'm in my fifties. Married, mother and grandmother.
I used to be a bookkeeper in our family business for 25 years. My DH & I are retired and loving it! For many years now.

I need to lose at least 20 pounds but would be terribly happy to get 30 pounds or more off this body of mine.

My faith in God will never change. Even though I am Catholic I am open to all faiths in the world. It is not for me to judge anyones following. I just live my faith and give by example. I also welcome open discussion... especially about Christ in my life.

Other Information:
Received my black belt in Hawaii Kempo in August 1998. Taught for 2 years then expanded to kick boxing exercise instructor at the dojo. Then went to the local gym and instructed for a year. Quit karate when I turned 50. Just before I was ready to test for my black belt in weapons.

Currently I am trying to get in shape. I think I am getting there, it's just that I am so much older now and still over weight.

My goal right now is to loosen up. So I need to get into a stretch routine. I am so tight!

You changed your picture, boy I love I like the other This picture we get to see the real you, so it's all good. Atleast I'm not the only one who "goes" to many classes. We don't have many to choose from like other dojo's. Mine is a dojang @ the YMCA and then Tuesday's at a Karate dojo that my Master rents out. I'm happy to have you right beside me for the rest of my martial art training, that will definitly be a long time.

Thanks for coming into my blogs. I wasn't "seriously" hurt, but if Jeff had have gone harder, he would had done damage..I was his ginipig. He told me, that one always hurts during practice. I'm glad that you recovered and that your back @ Spark. Now we have to get you into Karate again. One of my Master's, Jr., he showed up to his 4th Degree test with a I think "a broken hand" (which he didn't know). He did everything, his different station, patterns and his brick breaking. It was a mistake even to be there... but he passed. He never said anything about doing it again.

I love your story. It's making me think about how my life will pan out. I was born into a Christian Family and accepted the Lord @ age 7. 10 years latter, I redidicated my life to Christ and since then it's been a bumpy road. One year, I was living my life for the Lord and life did a major turn. I became an auntie to a child who mother isn't married. I was first shock that this happened to me and my family. Now, life s getting better for myself..but my nephew's life will never be the same. He will be going threw soo much in the years ahead and all I can do is watch. Giving him hugs and kisses and telling him that I always all I can do for him.

I joined Tae Kwon Do 3 months ago, after one of our teachers, Jr. kept on telling me to join. The class is helping me to have fun, be challenges, learn self-defence and to take that little bit of stress out of my life. My words above will definitly change in the next few months..but for now..that why I'm taking the class. My class is @ my local YMCA..and as strick as most places.
