Just when the caterpillar thought life was over, it became a butterfly!

As a teenager I was at a healthy weight for my height of 5'5" (115-120 lbs). Once I entered my twenties however, it became a different story. I began to gain weight, slowly at first than increasingly especially after the birth of my daughter at age 28. It wasn't until years later though that I realized I had developed a real problem with food. I understood for the first time that I had become a emotional compulsive overeater and had absolutely no clue how to control it. I tried every resource under the sun from fad diets to diet pills. Nothing worked longer than a few weeks. I always managed to gain the weight back, and those returning pounds brought friends.

2008 found me at 340 lbs, unhappy and very unhealthy. I had become a grandma the year before, a role I hold very dear that has brought me much joy, and with it a huge wakeup call. I knew if I was going to live long enough to watch my grandson grow up I had to do something about my weight and NOW! I have recognized the only thing that is going to reduce my size over the long term is healthy eating, portion control and exercise. In other words, the good ol' old fashion way. A complete lifestyle change was in order.

So I began taking the steps needed to create a new and improved me, inside and out. My journey is a slow one, it definitely has its share of ups and downs, good days and not so good. It is far from over but nonetheless I am happy to say I am on my way.

Over the course of a few years I dropped 80 lbs and have kept that off. Nevertheless the years of obesity have caught up to me and in January 1014 I collapsed unable to breathe and spent 5 days on Life Support. Turns out I have loss the use of my one remaining kidney ( loss the other as a child) due to uncontrolled High Blood Pressure and am heading for Dialysis and the Transplant List. My life is not my own anymore but I am doing the best I can. Taking it all day by day!

My advice to all those with a weight issue is ...Do what you can about your weight NOW before it's too late.
Don't take your health for granted!

    Welcome to the EE team!!

I’ve belonged to a lot of teams here on spark-- i really do believe that the Emotional Eaters team is one of the very best, it’s a great group of people- very supportive and encouraging-- and it is very refreshing to talk with people who "get" what you're going through!!

Spark has a lot of great tools, and you will learn which ones work best for you. The best tools are the people tho, always willing to lend a hand, an ear, or a shoulder. That has made a world of difference for me. I hope you have the same success!

~~best of luck to you on all of your goals!!!

Hi Sallie, I finally made it home from work to officially welcome you to the team. Thanks for adding me as one of your friends. If there is anything I can answer please let me know. I will be starting a new challenge just for Christmas that will fall on the lines of what you have already been doing. Will not be to entailed because I know it will be the holidays and everyone will be busy.

See you on the posts so we can get to know each other a little better. I know you just now coming back to spark since you joined in Jan, but to keep you motivated I have found that posting on the boards and getting to know everyone you will get the motivation from everyone.
