Balance. That is how I live now. I went to dinner with my family tonight to celebrate my dad's 74th birthday. I didn't eat the best and had a couple adult beverages but I'm NOT beating myself up for enjoying myself. I eat clean a lot more than I don't, and run, I bike, I strength train. Sparkpeople has taught me not to diet and live in disgust with myself, but to live healthy and confident.

Update December 2017: I've been on SP for about 7 years now. I've managed to lose 90lbs in total, but not all at once. I've found through my journey that I am stronger than I have given myself credit for. I am active and healthy, and that is all I've ever wanted. If you are reading this and you find yourself discouraged with where you are in your journey, just know that we all start somewhere and you can do it! It's not going to be easy but if you put in the work and stay consistent you will reach your goals. -----------------------------------
--- As many, I've battled with my weight all my life. I've tried various weight loss programs/diets/pills. I've starved myself and gorged myself. Every time I would lose weight, I had the mentality that I could go back to my old habits and suddenly, I'd be right where I was to begin with, and then some. At my heaviest, I think I was around 240 lbs. That is a guestimate, because at that weight, I didn't step on the scale. I was afraid of what it would say. I had finally had enough of getting out of breath walking up the stairs. I had enough of not being able to bend over to put on my shoes. I just had enough, period. I started to watch my portions, tried exercising more. I managed to whittle myself down to 180 lbs. I hit a plateau and wanted to give up. Then my son decided he wanted to join the high school cross country team. I was impressed that he wanted to run. And I watched him improve week by week. I found new motivation from him. I thought, "why can't I do that?" And then the Biggest Loser was on, and I see these 500 lb men RUNNING! A light bulb came on in my head, and I thought, "If they can run at 500 lbs, I most certainly have no excuse at 180 lbs" So I began running. Oh, it wasn't pretty at first. I felt like I was going to die after 1 minute. But I pushed on. Week by week I could go a little longer. I still felt like dying, but at the 5 minute mark instead of the 1 minute mark. I kept pushing on. I ran my first 5K 2 years ago. I now have 5 races under my belt. My favorite so far was the Color Run (picture at left is my son and I at the Color Run). I've already ran one this month (March 2013). I'm signed up for one in April, and again planning on the Color Run in July. I'm hoping to run my first 10K this year too. My journey has definitely had its ups and downs. But one thing that I've learned about myself, is that I'm not a quitter. I want to see how far I can really go!
