"I don't have a runner's body, but I have a runner's heart - and that is all you need." - Army Sergeant Jennifer Morris, Runner's World Challenger currently deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan

"Marathons are extraordinarily difficult, but if you've got the training under your belt, and if you can run smart, the races take care of themselves. When you have the enthusiasm and the passion, you end up figuring how to excel."
Deena Kastor

"The perfect run is when you kind of get into the zone. Your body feels light; you feel good. Those days when the monkey's off your back are just so great. You feel like you're invincible."
Kit Hoover, Cohost, Access Hollywood Live

"What I've learned from running is that the time to push hard is when you're hurting like crazy and you want to give up. Success is often just around the corner." Sir James Dyson

"A comedian once claimed that all running does is allow you to die in good health. Okay, I'll buy that." Hal Higdon

"We all know that if you run, you are pretty much choosing a life of success because of it." Deena Kastor - Love it!

"I tell our runners to divide the race into thirds. Run the first part with your head, the middle part with your personality, and the last part with your heart." Mike Fanelli

I found Sparkpeople on August 30, 2009 when I was 174 lbs. I had known for a long time I had to take control of my weight and I knew the basics - eat well and get moving. What I didn't have was a plan, actual goals or any real commitment. Sparkpeople has given me the focus, encouragement and motivation I had been lacking and I am well on my way to acheiving my long term goals now.

I began this journey with a short term goal of approximately 15 pounds before leaving for my vacation in Maui on October 31, 2009. I managed 11 pounds before my trip and I was totally okay with that. I had a great time and, more importantly, even though I took a break from Sparkpeople, I managed to maintain (almost) my weight loss and good habits that I had started. My long term goal at this point is to get down to 125 lbs so I still have a little ways to go.

Once we got back home, I swapped my snorkel gear for running shoes and decadent dinners out for more simple fare. Still missing the delicious fresh pineapples and papayas for breakfast though.

Jan 1 2010 -
I start this year 13 pounds less than I when I began Sparking! I had hoped to be a little farther along by this time, but I'm NOT discouraged. I know that the extra weight took years to build up and it is going to take a lot of hard work to make it disappear. I am eating more fruits & vegetables, I am learning what proper portions look like, I have more energy and my pants are getting looser! I look forward to going to the gym and building strength and endurance. In addition to my weight loss goal, at the beginning of November I also decided to become a runner like my husband so we can go for runs together!

January 4, 2010 - I paid a visit to physiotherapy to deal with shin splints and much to my disappointment, I've been told to stop running until further notice.

February 23, 2010 - Legs are healed and ready for action!!! I am on a very strict schedule to slowly build my running back up and if all goes well and there are no setbacks, I will be running a full 5k (with no walk intervals) by May.

February 28, 2010 - Today I have been on Sparkpeople for 6 months. I have made dozens of friends and learned so much. I am more than halfway to my long term goal (just 18 lbs to go) and I am feeling terrific. I am also back on track to becoming a runner - this time pain free! I have discovered Oxygen and Clean Eating magazines and I get up at 5:30 every morning to go to the gym. I enjoy trying new workout schedules and changing things up. Sometimes I love the scale - sometimes not so much, but the scale is only one measure of progress. There is also inches lost, energy levels, sleeping well, handling stress and just being happy.

Thank you Sparkpeople for being exactly what I needed!

January 1, 2011:
This page update is long overdue and I hardly know where to start.
Between February and April 2010 I dropped another 5 pounds and treadmill run/walks were going well. Then I was travelling for the entire month of May. I am an accountant and this is when pretty much the whole firm is spread out across the Arctic doing on-site audit work. The communities I visit are in the high arctic and it is 24 hours of daylight and still mighty cold. My work day is generally 12 - 16 hours so there is not much time for exercise, but I did what I could (crunches, planks, squats, pushups) and ate well. When I finally got home in June, I was still 143 pounds, so I was happy I hadn't lost any ground there.
I was eager to get back into running and the weather was perfect for it. About this time, my husband was asked if he wanted to participate in another marathon in support of Team Diabetes. He ran one in 2003 for his company's team and for the 10th anniversary, they were going to do Rome in 2011. And this time, I am going to run it too!
I know it seems quite ambitious to go from zero to 26.2 miles in less than 10 months but I am up to the challenge. We were going on vacation in September and found a half marathon on Vancouver Island that worked out perfectly with our marathon training schedule. Then for our trip to Maui in November, we were lucky enough to be there for 2 events. We participated in a 10km run for cancer and a 17.3km Harbor to Harbor race. This one was amazing and I picked up my first finisher's medal ever!

As you can see from my ticker, my weight loss has ground to a screeching halt. In actual fact I have been hovering from 143 to 148 (but I refuse to keep putting it up and down for the same 5 pounds). I know that this is because I have put the strength training on the back burner while I concentrated on building up my running base.

I now have much more confidence in my running and I am adding strength training back in. Scott will be happy to see this in writing! These last 20 pounds or so are going to be tough, but I am going to be tougher!!!

Cheers, Loreen
