The YMCA in my city lets low income people pay what they think they can afford.. My city has allows free access to leisure centers for people under a certain income. I hadn't known this until I saw it in a disability newsletter. Its not well known. You should check what your city may offer.

Hi Shirley, thanks for visiting my page. I added you as a friend. We need to fight that "I'm useless" feeling that we both sometimes get. It isn't good for us. The tools and people here have been helping me a lot. Yesterday was the only really bad day that I have had since the day after I joined. Use this place as a tool and the people here as resources to help you. It has been helping me and with more than losing some weight.

This just came on SP too. Might give you some ideas. Money and physical problems are no big handicaps. What you really just need is a WILL and a PLAN. Best of luck!

I just joined the Y because my health insurance pays for it. I certainly have lost weight without it. In fact I think it's easier just to do things on one's own.

I personally think that a good pair of walking shoes and a few pieces of exercise equipment at home are the best tools one can have. I'm a great fan of stationary bikes. If you can't afford one then look into simple peddle machines. But do your research!!! Don't get anything too cheap. They don't work and you are just throwing money away. Perhaps you can even put out an APB to family and friends that for holiday or birthday presents you would prefer some cash to apply for a nice piece of equipment. It doesn't have to be top of the line. I've seen some good reviews on machines around the $200 range.

You can buy things on-line but before doing that you can go to stores and try out exercise machines to see what you'd like. I don't like elliptical or treadmills but you may be different.

Even just some exercise bands or hand weights would be a start.

Most important thing is to find something that is FUN that you like to do. One woman on SP told how she started going to a Big Box store and pushing a cart around. When that became comfortable she began putting a bag of kitty litter in the cart. Eventually she would go around the store for an hour pushing a cart FULL of bags of kitty litter.

Keep reading around in SP. You will get lots of ideas.
