Day 87 - 3 days to go until 90

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Hmmm... 3 days until I reach the 90 day point from when I started this renewed journey. Some of what I've done have become new habits. But other things have been struggles.

Exercise is definitely my new very good habit. I've been very consistently exercising 6 days a week since March 1st. In SparkAmerica, I'm currently in 4th place for exercise minutes for the month in my area. And my area, Riverside, CA, is in a respectable 30th place in the nation. So not bad.

But food continues to be a struggle lately. In the beginning I was so controlled that I never went over my daily allotted calories. Not once that first month did I exceed my goal. Then I started allowing little cheats. Then I started allowing more regular cheats. Now I'm struggling to stay on track and stay under the max of my stated range on a daily basis.

Over the weekend I made another vat of my mexican vegetable soup. That's usually the staple of my work-day lunch. I ran out over a week ago and hadn't found the time to make a new batch and freeze it. I found the time on Saturday and got it done. I also made batches of apple muffins and chocolate chip mini-muffins. And dinner last night was Crockpot Chicken Salsa.

I also made an incredibly delicious low fat key lime pie recipe I saw in People Magazine. I wanted to make it and try it before I forgot about it. Unfortunately, it was great. I wish it hadn't been. I just need to not have those things in my house tempting me. I didn't eat too much of it any day this weekend, but having even one slice every day really cut into my available calories. In the future I need to make it only when there will be a lot more people eating it than just the 4 of us. That way I can have my slice and then not be tempted repeatedly by leftovers. It was awesome though. It didn't taste low fat at all! Yum! And it was easy too.

I have a couple more chocolate low fat dessert recipes I want to try from Cooks Illustrated (chocolate mousse and fudgy brownies). But I'm definitely going to wait for Steve's birthday before trying them. I don't need any more sweets in the house right now. Steve's favorite birthday treat is a chocolate creme pie. I'm going to do the chocolate mousse and make it into a pie. He also absolutely loves brownies. So I'll do those for him at some point too.

Today's morning weight was 177. Ugh! Wrong direction! I need to get over this hump and be at 175.5 by Saturday, which is my overall plan goal for that date.

I'm also concerned because I have two weeks in a hotel coming up for my two week annual tour with the Air Force. That starts on the 2nd. I'll be separated from my staple foods, my scale, my routine, and my kitchen in which I control the ingredients of what I eat. I'll see what I can do about that.

I have to concur about the lowfat or lowcal desserts. If you're like us, they're still going to cause problems! I will sliver off slices of cake or pie like there's no tomorrow. Just a miniscule 1/16 inch slivers, but repeatedly throughout the day. Suddenly the cake's gone and I know I'm the only one who's been eating it! I'm amazed you can portion out those muffins and stay in control!
