Who is standing in your way?

Friday, July 04, 2008

From the Healthy Reflections email:

Imagine someone regularly tying small weights around your ankles as you try to climb a mountain. Doesn't sound fair, does it? But that's exactly what you can do to yourself, a little bit at a time, if you don't watch out. When you think of who and what is standing in the way of your dreams, it's easy to forget your own responsibility. Even the best of us can be guilty of unknowingly hurting our own progress. Procrastination, lateness, being disorganized, pessimism, not being honest with yourself, severe self-criticism, downplaying achievements, focusing only on weaknesses while ignoring strengths, keeping goals a secret, demanding perfection, giving up after a small setback--these are all ways you can make it tough to be (and do) your best. Smart systems, the right attitude, and a promise to keep going no matter what will make a world of difference.

Something we were withholding made us weak, until we found it was ourselves.

- Robert Frost

I am definitely guilty of this from time to time. I'm getting better--I am sharing my goals and holding myself accountable. I still struggle with procrastination (is this possibly a genetic trait??), but I *am* doing much better at forcing myself to get up and going. It can be soooo easy to make excuses--especially with a newborn--but I am striving to rise above that.

And on the days where I fall short of my goals? I need to make sure that I don't deem myself a "failure." It is so self-defeating and can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Here's to accountability and a positive mental attitude!

    Good Morning,

Wow!! Did I need to read this blog this morning. As I sit here at work about to pull another 12 hours on a holiday that I would rather be with my family. Procrastination is a big one for me. My procrastination cost me over $600 this month, and you know I could have used that money. For me it is easier to blame other, who played a part, but the main person at fault is myself. I blame the husband, the new grandson crying and anything else I can when I know I should just go to the library to study. My favorite saying is I don't pay mortgage at the library -- so what. Though it may be an inconvenience it will be more of an inconvenience to pay the money to repeat the class and to have to take the time to take the class again.

Let's get up off our butts, count our successes and put those failures behind us. Today starts a new day for me -- what about you?

So, I guess to answer your question. "Who is standing in my way?" I WAS standing in my way. emoticon
