Strength Training

Thursday, July 16, 2009

I'm confused (nothing new lol). I am hearing and reading different view points about strength training. My Curves personal trainer says to come in and do the circuit every day. The circuit is 95% strength training equipment with some cardio thrown in. Most of what I've read on SP says to put at least 1-2 days in-between strength training to give your muscles time to heal from the tearing down process that accompanies strength training. I hope someone out there will have an answer for me!

I visited my orthopedist today for the shots he puts in my knees to cushion my joints. He said it's a 'trade-off'. He said 5 days a week wouldn't hurt my joints and that the muscles would heal as usual but that I need to do what feels 'right' to me. If I knew that, I wouldn't be in this 'pickle'. :-)

I'm sitting out every other day based on these responses; ALL the other information I've received over a lifetime; and SP research! I'm not sure what the point is of giving me wrong information. Hopefully this person was trained before taking on this job. She's just wrong!! I remember her telling me to do 3 days a week for two weeks to start; then to come 5 days a week if I wanted to make my SP goal of 180 by January! lol I'll show her! I'm going to go for that goal anyway! hehehee Thanks for the responses.

I agree with the comments already posted. We have a Curves next to the office here and they recommend 3 days per week. The community center I belong to also says 3 days per week. So I think Sparkpeople has the correct infomation in giving your muscles a day or two of rest between sessions.

I have always heard that you need to allow a day of rest between strength training sessions. I don't know the qualifications of the Curves trainer, but I do know that Spark People info has been well researched.

Thanks for the comment. You are saying exactly what I've been thinking but wanted to go along with the owner of my Curves. Guess I do know more about that than she does. After all, SHE doesn't belong to SP. :-)

I don't mean to insult your personal trainer, but she is nuts, based on the SP experts and my experience. I was always taught to give the muscles at least one day of rest. It is ok if you work upper body one day and lower body the next, but not the same muscle group on consecutive days. I do a chair exercise DVD which only uses 2 lb weights and even at that light weight, the instructor advises a day of rest between workouts. I belonged to a Y once in SC and they would not permit working the same muscles on consecutive days. You can e mail Nicole and see what she says. My daughter goes to Curves here and was told no more than every other day.
