Sunday was a recovery day from a giant, too-rich buffet dinner Saturday night. Was feeling too dragged and tired to work out.

Then...pulled an almost-all-nighter Sunday night, preparing for a conference this week. Had to do it, but when heaped on top of a day of poor eating and no exercise, Monday I was really run down.

I didn't track food earnestly on Monday or at all on Tuesday, and didn't work out either day either.

Today, I'm back on the wagon. Ran for 45 minutes, varying pace and just trying to find my legs again. Felt rough, but glad I did it. Should help me get some sleep tonight and start feeling refreshed again. It's time to start a new running program and building up the mileage again.

    Yeah, sounds like a good plan! When I started running again, I was almost in a tai-chi like state, I was so conscious of every movement! I have dodgy hips and knees and concentrated very hard on good form. And it worked - I avoided injury. It's second nature, most of the time, now. I only really go into major concentration down steep hills (bad on the knees).

    No, I don't. I was wearing a compression sleeve, but it bothered me.

    The instability I mentioned has to do more with static forces than with what I feel is happening when I'm running. For instance, there's a twisting motion when I'm balancing on one leg that bothers my ankle as I try to compensate during weight shifting. I don't experience that when I run.

    I could probably tape the ankle to restrict the degree of lateral motion and reduce the risk of hyper-extending the joint should I hit an uneven spot on the ground or for some reason land with too much tilt. I'm not sure if that's not too much of a crutch, though. Besides maybe being just too lazy to bother spending the minutes it would take to wrap it each outing, I think I'm more conscious of how my feet are landing when I don't have it wound or strapped up, giving me an artificial sense of security. In a way, I think I'm training myself to run with better technique by not wrapping it.

    Like I said, I'm having no problems running on it now, so it's not like I need some support to make my ankle work. It would only serve as a small measure of protection should I encounter a twisting risk again, limiting more damage. It may be wrong, but my thinking right now is that I'd have to wean myself off of it eventually anyway, and this way I'm acutely aware of my foot strike and perhaps training myself to develop a good foot strike habit.

    Ya, I was wondering. Bad ankle injuries have a way of hanging around for ages. I turned my ankle really badly in school, and it was weaker than the other one for years. Do you strap it?

    Ankle's kind of weird, actually. I can run on it without any problem, but it's not altogether stable. It was quite a bit sore above the ankle after 2 days of standing and walking around Disneyland/California Adventure theme parks. It doesn't have the range of motion or full flex that I would like right now. I'm kind of suspicious that I had a fracture and not simply a ligament sprain, and that perhaps it's mended not quite right. I keep thinking I'll go in and see a new doctor and get it checked again.

    But it's good to be running again. I just have to be very cautious about avoiding a re-injury. If I roll it again at this point, I might be off of it for much, much longer.

    Keep up the good work. You know what makes you feel good or great. Just keep that in mind when you slow dow on your exercising. emoticon
