Day 1 Boot Camp

Sunday, January 03, 2010

Sundays are usually my day of rest from exercise. But I seemed to have a little more energy than usual and a little cabin fever. I have had to do most of my workouts and running indoors for the past couple weeks because of cold weather or icy road conditions. Today the roads were clear, the sky was blue and the sun was reflecting off the snow in a very enticing winter wonderland effect.

I doubled up every layer of outer wear. I put on my North Face base layer leggings and my thicker running pants, my wool socks, a nice long sleeved base layer top that I just got for Christmas, put on my fleecey mid layer and a thin outer shell to block wind. Neck muffler that I can pull up over my mouth and even up to my eyes if it gets too cold! Thermal headband to cover my ears and my ironman sunglasses to protect my eyes from the sun/snow glare. Oh, and I put my best running buddy, Cowboy, on his leash and took him along today. This was not a scheduled run, it was just a 'cuz I feel like being outside run. So, I really didn't have an agenda for the run, no distance to cover, no time to meet . . . just go outside and have fun run!

It was excellent! I'd run for a while and then walk and play with Cowboy. Then I'd run for a while longer. Cowboy doesn't usually go with me and he really seems to enjoy my running pace. He would probably enjoy it more if I could run a little faster. All and all, a great day! Fresh air always makes me tired, in a good way. After I pulled off half my layers and drank some water, I started in on my bootcamp video for the day. Wow! Who knew that 10 minutes of jumping up, back, forward, side to side, up and down, could wear you out so thoroughly?! Now I know!

My reward for all this huffing puffing is the knowledge that I got it done AND I took a nice bubble bath afterward! I'm a big believer in an epsom salt bath after exertion. It really does make a difference in my recovery time.

Okay, enough blabbing. Food and Activity Accountability Time:

Cardio: 10 minute bootcamp video with only one modification
30 minute run/walk with my pup
Total Calorie Burn = 392

Breakfast: Steel Cut Oats w/pecans, banana & semi sweet choc. chips

Lunch: Extra Lean Ground Sirloin mixed with diced green peppers, onion,
ground flax seed and dried italian seasoning mix
served on a Slimwich bun
1 cup of broccoli/mushroom/green bean veggie mix

Snack: 1 Navel Orange
1 cup skim milk
47 Pistachio Kernels

Dinner: 4 oz. Tilapia Fillet
1 cup of Basamati Rice
1 cup of Brussel Sprouts
Rye Crisp Crackers w/ 1 oz. chevre cheese

Total Calories = 1,674 which is the lower end of my 1,650 - 1,900 calorie range! Which gives me a 700 calorie differential on a day that is usually a rest day! Go me!

This is my running buddy, Cowboy. He always grins for the camera! Silly dog!

And I love Cowboy. Can he teach my Doodle how to be a proper running buddy? She's got ADHD - which means we stop suddenly, veer left unannounced, and trip each other up with the leash. LOL

Love it when I have surplus energy that moves me to spontaneously exercise. That's why we keep on doing this whole healthy thang. Fueling with good food and moving the body. Awesome job.

That is outstanding! I couldn't convince or push myself to go outside today. Because, to be honest I was lazy. I could say that I am sick with my chest cold (which I am) and that was my excuse, but I don't have any excuses anymore. I could have done it, at least for a little while, but I chose not to. I did, however, get in my Bootcamp Video which I am very excited about. I could feel it in my lungs. I have done this video before with the Cardio Blast DVD from Spark, but its been a while and it did me in too. I am glad you got everything you wanted accomplished today. You did great in all aspects that you set out to do. Very proud and encouraging. Keep it up! Day 1 down and more exciting ones to come.

    P.S. - Cowboy is gorgeous.

Way to go Carolyn!!! keep up the good work girl!!! My dog likes to sniff to much to run with...lol...she is silly and will run then when I get going she plum stops and gets me all caught up in her leash!!! lesson learned...we walk together and enjoy every sniff we can along the way lol it's safer that way! Give Cowboy and extra scratch behind the ear for me for a job well done!!!

Great job Carolyn! Love your dog Cowboy, what a sweetheart!!! You give me so much to look forward to when I start my program post 100% recovery starting Feb. 8th. I've thought about using my little Stewie(posted in my photos on my sparkpage)as a running partner as well. He loves to go, so I may just do that.

It's a great feeling when you have so much energy you just gotta get out there and GO! I love running in the cold weather, it's so refreshing but only when it's sunny....here in Rowlett, Tx. at the moment, it's just been cold and cloudy and just plain yucky. I'll start my walking 3 X a day tomorrow, to get my muscles conditioned....the old body might go into shock as it hasn't done anything like this since a week pre-surgery but I am really looking forward to it!!! Woohoo, although the temps this week here are supposed to be quite frigid for Tx.

Have a super week and great job on the nutrition. Good food!!!
