"Mommy, I'm fat!"

Friday, April 08, 2011

I first heard that phrase when my daughter was 3. But, I was always saying it, myself, and knew she was just repeating me. After all, she was a little stick!

Flash forward to present time... Now, it breaks my heart to hear her utter these words. She is 10 years old. Tall, blonde, smart, and beautiful (yes, I'm a little partial!:).
I quit saying "I'm fat!" in front of her because I didn't want her to think that is all that mattered when you are female. But, she tells me she's "fat" and walks around school all day sucking her tummy in so the other kids won't tease her! Her tummy? That little bit of pudge? THAT makes her fat?!?! When I was her age, I was as wide as I was tall!! Only when I was older did I lose weight and realize the life and energy I had been denying myself.
I decided that part of my 'mission' is to set a good example for my daughter. Granted, we both have heredity working against us. I want her to grow to be a STRONG and HEALTHY woman. Regardless of society's "standards." emoticon

Setting a good example for your daughter is the best gift you can give her. I can hear in your words how much you love her. Together you will grow in the journey. I wish you the best of luck.

My mom put me on my first diet when I was 6, 25 years later I am still on that diet. Thank you for being mindful. My inner child (who was not fat, by the way) thanks you too.

The sad part is that it's more socially acceptable for girls to find fault with themselves than to celebrate their strengths. Good luck!

I was called pudgy when I was ten and it ruined me for life. I have been a on a dieting yo yo ever since. And if you look at my pics you will see me as a kid in a green suit in a pool and that was when I was told by a beloved family member I was getting fat. I was crushed. Good for you for trying to break this cycle now.
