"Mommy, I'm fat!"

I first heard that phrase when my daughter was 3. But, I was always saying it, myself, and knew she was just repeating me. After all, she was a little stick!
Flash forward to present time... Now, it breaks my heart to hear her utter these words. She is 10 years old. Tall, blonde, smart, and beautiful (yes, I'm a little partial!:).
I quit saying "I'm fat!" in front of her because I didn't want her to think that is all that mattered when you are female. But, she tells me she's "fat" and walks around school all day sucking her tummy in so the other kids won't tease her! Her tummy? That little bit of pudge? THAT makes her fat?!?! When I was her age, I was as wide as I was tall!! Only when I was older did I lose weight and realize the life and energy I had been denying myself.
I decided that part of my 'mission' is to set a good example for my daughter. Granted, we both have heredity working against us. I want her to grow to be a STRONG and HEALTHY woman. Regardless of society's "standards."
