My First Race Recap - Warrior Dash Edition

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

This Sunday I ran my first 5K, the Warrior Dash here in Minnesota. What a blast! I was really impressed with how well it was organized. With over 24,000 runners plus spectators, I never found myself waiting for anything. Need a shuttle to or from parking? Get on here. Need to get your race gear? Come right here. Want to eat or drink something? Step right up. The staff was great. High energy and very eager to help you.

My sister-in-law and her boyfriend came up from Chicago to run with me. I'm glad they did. It would have still been fun, but the "team" feel did add to the excitement. So we left the house about 5:30am. Got to the race site at about 7:00am. We got our bibs and chips, and checked our stuff in the gear check tent.

Here we are ready for battle!

At about 7:45 they called the first wave to the starting area. We all piled in tot he shoot. It seemed to take forever to start.

8:00! The fire goes! And we're off! The start was a bit acquired. It took awhile for the "herd" to thin out. The first part wasn't bad. Nice green field to run through and then we come around the first corner and we're running straight up the ski slope! These hills were killer. After getting up to the top of the first hill you wrapped around and found yourself going down the slope now and at an angle. Once I reached the bottom I took another turn. And, oh good, another ski slope to climb. At the top we get into the first major obstetrical. The junk yard. Then right away in to the hurricane, which is snow making machines blasting you from both sides. This was a tough one because you suddenly can't see and its blowing so hard you can't breath. Then I was off running again. More hills! My favorite... This went on for the next couple of miles. Obstacle then hills, obstacle then hills... Someone wore a ProCam and put together this video of our course. Enjoy!

Here's me at the finish.

I had a great time. I'm so glad I signed up for this. Thank you Coach Nicole for your inspiration. It was your post about your run that made me want to do this.

I'm also pretty happy with my finish. 57:28. Not bad for a guy that still needs to lose 80lbs.

Love it. My Warrior Dash in SoCal was fun, but we didn't have hills.

    Well done!

Great job! Those hills were killer, weren't they? My sister had two bad ankles, so we walked nearly everything and skipped a few obstacles. Looks like you were early enough in the day to get muddy water - I was full on mud when I came out of the pit!

CONGRATULATIONS! I have to do one of these one day. The video was nice, too. Looks like that guy had a blast. I love the slow motion jump into the mud. Just think you are going to get faster!
