A quick Explanation...

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Just a quick answer to CBEVNOW's question... I have diabetic retinopathy, a condition (a complication) where high blood sugar causes damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eyeball. It's made worse by high blood pressure, too--and I have both. Right now, with the numbers out of control, there is an area in the back of my left eye that is bulging. If I can't get the numbers under control and reduce the pressure on the blood vessels in that area, I am at risk for a rupture that could blind me in that eye. The only other solution to the problem is laser surgery to repair &/or remove the damaged portion...

Hence the monitor. If we can figure out whether there's a pattern hidden in the data from the monitor, we can adjust insulin dosages more accurately and give me a better chance at avoiding this outcome...

It's not been bad, the 'chemical barrier' seems to be working so far, though the proof of the pudding is whether I react when the protective bandage is removed...

Not much time tonight, tomorrow is a busy day (like there's a day that isn't! LOL) and my sleep cycle is all messed up so I'm trying to get to bed before 11:00 pm... I've got FOUR MINUTES! LOL

G-night! Be well...

Praying that this gives you the information to get everything back on an even keel. Glad that you stay on top of things!!! I have to say though, Kathy, if you didn't have bad luck you wouldn't have any luck at all. Seriously, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

    Hi Kathy,

let's hope you get the sugar under control. Diabetic Retinopathy is a serious problem. Unfortunately it also most of the time goes hand in hand with similar diabetic changes in the kidney, which again can also cause the blood pressure to increase. Our Diabetologists always say you can see on the Retina if there is damage to the kidney. But I am sure your diabetologist has checked that as well.

I remember a friend of mine whose blood sugars used to shoot for some unexplained reason at 5am, they also only realized that with a monitor. Then they re-adjusted the timings for her medications (she is only on tabs) and the timings for when she eats how much carbs and they managed to control it well. So hang in there, while the specialists work on the solution.

Did you manage to get to bed before 11?

Hope that the monitor helps give you the answers you want. Nothing is ever easy. But you are smart to stay on top of these things. Best wishes and prayers.

Wishing you all the best and hoping that the monitor gives some clues to establish a treatment to control your blood sugar (and hypertension). HUGS

    Hey Kiddo.....
Just another opportunity to send you big hugs!!

If it's any consolation.....I'm starting on an anti-malaria drug (for the Lupus) - and I need an eye exam to establish some sort of baseline....because one of the rare side effects of this drug is losing color vision in both eyes.... I'm not worried, because I'll be sure to be monitored along the way.....
You too....take care of what needs taking care of.....and it'll be OK.
We'll be fine. YOU'LL be fine!!

    Luv u.

Kathy, it sounds like you've got a lot to bear. But it also sounds like you're in control of your problems. I hope the test results are good and your eye turns out to be okay.
