When are you beautiful?

Saturday, June 02, 2012

Beauty is something that I have been thinking about. I see on pages people saying, "I want to lose weight to feel beautiful or sexy." So, if you lose XX # of pounds, you automatically become beautiful &/ or sexy? Well, maybe.... or maybe not. I am 2/3 of the way through my journey and some days I feel beautiful and some days, so not.

That made me start thinking, what is beauty anyway? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as: the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. OK, no where in there does it say that you need to weigh a certain amount to be beautiful. So, beauty simply put is being appealing to all the senses. Lotion, perfume, here I come. But seriously, it's very personal, just like this journey we are on.

So,I staredt thinking about people who I think are beautiful. Like Katharine Hepburn. She is such a strong, independent woman with her own unique style. I definitely admire that about her. She wore pant suits when most other women didn't.

Or how about Audrey Hepburn? So, very graceful. I think she must be the woman who invented the LBD.

Somehow, I feel I must include Sophia Loren, too.

I look at these three very beautiful but very different women and I ask myself, what makes them beautiful? I think, that they are beautiful because the way the dress reflects who they are as a person.

So, I think the answer to the question, "When are you beautiful?" isn't so simple. I think being beautiful is truly a state of mind. I think, you are beautiful when you are comfortable with who you are. I think self-confidence is beautiful. I admire intelligent women. I think someone with a beautiful smile is wonderful. Someone who is graceful is lovely.

You will not be more beautiful than you are today. However, losing weight, the journey itself, will hopefully give us more self-confidence and a bigger smile. These things make us more beautiful. Buying a new perfume, lotion, a new top that compliments our eyes, a new haircut, that emphasizes the length of our face, instead of roundness, these things are necessary. Anything that brightens the mood, make us stand taller, and make us feel more confident, are good things.

Love this!! I agree: beauty is a state of mind -one I wish we could call up when wanted. :)

I've always thought that there are truly no physically 'ugly' people in the world - everyone has something about them that is beautiful, all you have to do is look for it... and that includes looking for it in ourselves.

Now, 'inside ugly' is another matter all together. *nods*

    "I think self-confidence is beautiful."

That is the thing that can make a woman (or man) most beautiful. Being sure of you and your abilities is what attracts others to you, no matter what you look like or how much weight you carry.

I think Melissa McCarthy from "Mike and Molly" and other movies is very beautiful (just to mention one that many people might not think is). She carries herself like shes the center of the room on everything I've see her in and she's not a skinny twig. She has lots of self confidence.

    great blog! Well done!

There are lots of beauties out there in the world. And not all of them are slender either. Christina Schmidt and Marilyn Monroe are two that come to my mind immediately. Both these women are/were plus sized women. Because like you said , confidence in themselves. but the other thing that comes to my mind is another well known phrase " Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

""When are you beautiful?" isn't so simple. I think being beautiful is truly a state of mind." Self imaging is a big problem in today's world, teens through to adulthood. The medias have created the biggest part of this insecurity that people have about their own beauty and sexiness by consistently choosing extra thin models and and professional people to put into print or onto film.

The camera puts on ten pounds, so a lot of these people are consious of that and actually weigh even thinner than we percieve them to be, because rather than like the body they have they perfer the look of the one caught on camera and choose to perfect that one. That is the one that women, and men, strive to look like as that is the one they think is sexy and beautiful. Because this same type is always portrayed the brainwashing has begun

While there are the few that do break the rule, and those few are usually actively trying to change the visual norm of who are accepted as beautiful and sexy, it is not becoming a popular choice.

For me, every one is beautiful. Some may be physically beautiful, but I find beauty in many ways. There is beauty to be found in the charisma of a person, in the soul of a person, and the kindnesses of a person. It does not stop there as beauty is not just skin deep. Again something a lot of people do not realize. Just as some people will never achieve thinking of themselves as beautiful and sexy
