Sugar-Free Struggles/Check-In

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Hey all!

I am doing a brief check-in because I binged last week. No need to go into details, but I binged on something sugary. This left me wondering if completely sugar-free is a good idea...

I have gone back and forth on trying to find the best diet for me, and I know my body doesn't lose weight if I'm eating sugar/gluten regularly. So I know what I need to do. However, until I have fully surrendered to this reality, I'm not sure if I should continue to go down this road.

Thoughts? I would be particularly interested in thoughts from former/current binge eaters about what works best for you.

I am around 148lbs now, so I have gained a little since mid-summer. Most likely from eating sugar again. Hmmm

ps. I keep forgetting to take my progress pictures! I will try really hard to have them taken this week.

Oh, can I relate!! Sweet is my hardest issue. I have maintained my 80+ pounds loss now for over 3 years now. I must admit I substitute artificial sweeteners for sugar, but I still crave sweet. I am now really working hard to cut down on Splenda and Sweet n Low (mostly in hot tea and coffee), sugar free hot chocolate, sugar free yogurt and puddings, Cary's syrup, sugar free ice cream, diet drinks, etc. I am trying to stick to 4 servings of fruit per day, too, but often go over.

I have gone up to 3 weeks with nothing sweet. Perhaps that is not long enough, but my cravings did not diminish.

So, I guess what I'm saying is you can live at the weight you want to be by substituting artificial sweeteners. I have cut back on sweet things, but still know I overdo them.

Best wishes for finding an answer. I'm going to try again to give up sweets. If I find myself overly obsessing, I'll try moderation.

I've also been on a sugar and gluten-free eating plan since the beginning of June. My body has responded very well so far. Last week, I started back to work (I'm a teacher) and I had 4 days of really poor eating. It was SUPER hard seeing the scale jump up like it did, but once I got back to clean eating, the binge weight fell right off. It's tough to stick to this, but it's a great foundation if you can quickly right the ship after a binge. I agree about the artificial sweeteners-- they might be triggering some sweets cravings. If you feel like this eating plan is healthy mentally and physically, then I say stick with it! Good luck!

Hi! Good to hear from you. :) emoticon

Do you consume any products with artificial sweeteners? There have been studies linking fake sugars to sugar cravings, which often lead to sugar binges... Things like diet soda, light yogurt, and other diet products often contain them.

I'm a binger.... I binged today ON sugar free candy hahaha.... I have to eliminate food groups that cause me triggers or only eat them in public.

I've tried many times to reward myself with ONE sweet treat and I can't control it.... before I know it I've eaten the whole pack. If I just keep it out of my house or tell myself I can have NONE I do much better.... if I need to eat sweets (like a sliver of a birthday cake) if people are around I don't do so bad.
