Todays 10K race.

Sunday, September 02, 2012

The race....hmmmm... not too sure I enjoyed it that much. For starters I slept in, somehow set my alarm half an hour later than I intended. Not the best start. I got to my car park before the road closures so that was fine but the footpath to access to the race venue had been fenced off. A lot of unhappy people as no-one had told us about this, but we worked out how navigate around the fencing so no big deal in the end. The weather was sunny and a little too warm, I really was sweating after the warm up before we even got into the pens. Once we got started it was difficult to find my pace with so many people. Usually the crowd thins between one and two Kms but this didn't seem to happen this year. I ran without walk intervals upto 6K then set my watch to 4mins:45secs ratio. This was working okay until the hills where I had to walk at the wrong time which messed up the timings a little! I really struggled on the last couple of kms it was just too hot. I had been checking the time at each marker to try and come in under the hour but by 8K I really didn't care anymore and just wanted it over. I did manage a bit of a sprint for the last 200-300m but this just made me nauseous at the end! My finish time was 1 hour and 2 seconds! Given the conditions I should be happy with the time but overall I just didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. On the plus side my heel felt fine during the race and is still okay now, but I do have sore big toes as a result of my bunions, I think perhaps I will try a half size up in my next running shoes.

Good job on completing the race, even if you weren't totally happy with your performance! I think the time is sounding pretty awesome with your walking intervals included.

I am really impressed with your time! No wonder you were tired, but if you were walking some you must be able to really do a good pace when running.

Even though it wasn't as much fun as you would have liked, you were out there and that is super!

My last 10K race was very humid and just wanted it to be over with, too. I wish I could run an ideal race where everything goes right but I have yet to find it. You did great :o)

Congratulations on doing so well in the race! Good job to you as well, for powering through when things were not so easy. I am proud of you and always enjoy reading about your runs and races!

I can certainly sympathize (empathize) with having to deal with a hot day. The last 10K I ran (last March!) was unusually hot, and we all gave up on PRs that day!

I'm glad to hear that the heel was fine. Larger shoes is my main strategy for coping with my bunions. It seems to make a big difference with having space in the toe box where my toes need it.

Good job. Temp really makes a big deal in a run. It really would off balance you to wake up late and the to find your way to the start blocked. Oh my.

Bummer that you missed an hour by 2 sec. But it sounds like it was a just off race.

Some runs just aren't fun. Your body still thanks you though. And yeah, I need a running shoe specialist to help ensure my shoes fit properly.

Not every race feels great, but you showed up and crossed the line! Good time, in my opinion, but I'm a penguin! Keep it up, assess the experience and learn for the next one. It's found to be great!

No matter how hot it is outside or how cool it could be, I wish you well in this run. Be careful of the sun. I know you like to run so you are a greater person than me. See you on SP when you WIN!
