Every year our county has its "Trail of History" in one of the forest preserves. It tells the early history of settling McHenry County, Illinois.
It starts with a long hike-about 2 miles back to the camp.
And then you get to the camp....
Demonstration on making a canoe from a tree.
Trapping was big back then...
Looking from afar. This is one of the few hills in northern Illinois. Things are generally pretty flat here. The walk back to the camp is kind of hilly and it was a beautiful fall day. Unfortunately most of our color is already gone. All the actors and helpers are volunteers. They do a wonderful job every year.
Wow!! Don't know how I missed this blog! Awesome photos! What a great idea of your county! Very important not to forget history. Trapping was big in my family -my Mother grew up on a trap line, living in a one room shack with her Mother, a Cree. It was a hardscrabble life, living off the land, but sure built her strong character of never giving up. Thank you for sharing this!! Wish you would blog more often, tell us what is going on with your life -love to hear from you! 2336 days ago
Sue, I love re-enactments. It is so much easier to learn from seeing the people in costume and demonstrating what was going on. I made several costumes for the Militia here. HUGS and much love. Thanks for reading my blog. We both of our families had a good Thanksgiving. It was nice for you to have family around. We were able to chat a long time. It went very well. 2727 days ago

Thanks for this blog, very interesting, and great to be able to share in the history with you. I love hearing about other places, cultures and traditions - and putting them on my list of places to go and see. It's quite a long list.... 3117 days ago

Great photo's and a fun way to work in fitness. Are U near McChesney Park? I have a nephew there and he seems to enjoy going to things like this. I thought it would be funny if you just happened to get his photo, but I didn't see him. (LOL) He is usually behind a camera ...He luvs taking photo's too. JO 3126 days ago
That looks like fun! I love history, and am excited to now be living in Northern Virginia where there's LOTS of it to be found! Come visit us here sometime -- we have beautiful mountains and ('til the storm hits, anyway) gorgeous fall color!
