changing a habit, day six

Thursday, March 07, 2013

Still working away at this new habit of eating slower. It's going pretty well overall. I do have to frequently remind myself to slow down as I'm eating or before I know it I'll be plowing quickly through my meal as I've done all my life!

I welcome any words of advice on how to stick to my goals, or suggestions for how to become a more mindful and slower eater. It's really difficult, especially when busy, to keep the eating slow.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, and hope you all have a terrific day!

One tip I used to help me with this is putting down my fork down between each and every bite. Not picking it up until I fully chewed my food. Hope it works out for you! emoticon

    I did a little research, and thank you for this question because I am going to some of use these ideas myself. Here are a few of the ideas I found;

+ Eat with other slow eaters
    + Play relaxing background music
    + Dim the lights
    + Deliberately taste your food
+ Try to identify every ingredient in your meal
+ Use chopsticks for all cuisines at least once a week
+ Swallow your bite of food before putting the next item on your fork
+ Serve your meals in courses instead of family style

Just a few things that might help.

    One meal at a time!

Be 'present' during your meal (make it enjoyable and not just a routine event)!!

How about being sure to take sips of water/beverage in between bites...remember to really give yourself time to taste the flavors (that said even making your food a little more spicy & new flavors...those may help you slow down to enjoy the taste?)....

If you're not dining alone be sure to rest utensils everyone once in awhile...pick up your napkin & maybe start some chit-chat...you'll probably slow down with some conversation too....?

Not quite sure the best way to approach myself...hopefully one of these thoughts help...

i admire your goal. it's definitely not something that i'm good at, so i'm in no position to give advice. fortunately, others have done that well.

    you can do this!

Like Maria's suggestion, I find putting down my fork/chopsticks down between bites (and hope that the chopsticks don't roll away).

Have you tried putting your utensils down between bites? Are you sitting down at the table without distractions when you're eating? Are you enjoying the moment or already thinking about the next thing you need to get done?
Just some things to reflect on which may help you to eat slower and more mindfully.
Wishing you success in developing your new habit.
