Core Health Beliefs

Today's SparkCoach challenge is to write myself a letter as my own best friend. While mulling over the challenge, I tuned into the Fatloser course lesson #19
( www.fatloser.com ) and decided to write this blog instead. I've been following Onekidsmom's comparison of Fatloser homework questions from two years ago and from the present. Since this is my first time in the course, I can't compare, but I am pleasantly surprised by my answers to today's questions on beliefs. First, I have to note Steve Siebold (Fatloser coach) uses the word "diet" in the way we at SP use the words "lifestyle change," and after failing many "diets," I prefer "lifestyle change." So here are the questions and my answers, with some of the wording borrowed shamelessly from SparkPeople (especially the Mind Over Body plan), some from my friend Wendy Bumgarder ( walking.about.com ), and some from my own experience.

What are your five strongest beliefs about dieting?
1. Diets are limiting; lifestyle change is open ended.
2. Diets are superficial; lifestyle change occurs on many levels.
3. I can (and do) eat my favorite foods but as occasional treats and in smaller amounts even WHILE losing weight and while keeping it off.
4. Lifestyle change is long-term, while dieting is short-term.
5. The scale is only a tool; non-scale victories are just as elating.

What are your five strongest beliefs about exercise?
1. 10,000 steps a day is not enough; aim for at least 3000 steps in 30 minutes (get some cardio).
2. Strength training is a must.
3. Flexibility is important (yoga, pilates, any regular stretching).
4. Trying to force myself to like an activity is like dieting...formula for failure. Finding a fitness activity I enjoy keeps me coming back.
5. Changing up fitness routines keeps things fresh.

Have these beliefs contributed to your being fat?
Um, no. These are the beliefs I cultured and nurtured with help from SparkPeople to help me lose the weight and keep it off.
