Crossfit Day 1

Friday, May 09, 2014

"CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program where you do a variety of functional exercises such as box jumps, pull ups, throwing things, pulling things, running, weight lifting, gymnastics, and much more. We’ve combine them all together in a workout that is fun but challenging and intensive for the best workout ever!" TeamCrossfit

This was the year I was going to go all out with ST. With my various collections of DVD's, I started January with 30DayShred. I completed the month but I just couldn't bring myself to press play in February or March. For April I was gung-ho for Insanity and that lasted a full 2 weeks. lol

I've been reading about Sparkers who are having good results from Crossfit, so when I saw an advertisement for a 2 day pass I went for it. After purchasing the pass, I had to fill out an online survey with age, weight, etc, and also the question "From 1 - 5, 1 being a couch potato and 5 being Bring it On, rate yourself." I, in all my humility and all, wrote down 2.5. I mean I can run, but I've never used real heavy weights before, so 2.5 it is.

First off, Crossfit is not a gym, it's a box, and it has the most amazing equipment in it. Heavy weights, pull-up bars, ropes, rings, kettle-bells, and medicine balls. It probably has even more amazing things but I was put right in front, so the Coach could keep her eye on me. There were 3 coaches, for 18 clients. We were a mix of ages and fit levels, so I really didn't feel out of place at all.

The first ten minutes was stretching with air-squats, jumping-jacks, and modified burpees. Next, we were shown how to perform each exercise in our Workout Of the Day (WOD). I was impressed that the Coach really took her time explaining the proper moves to me and then keeping her eye on me throughout the workout. In fact, I felt as though I had my own private coach. After we were shown the proper moves, and what weights we should use, the timer was set for 20 minutes and we were instructed to do 3 sets. My exercises were modified and I did 25 air squats, 15 jumping pullups with a band, and then 10 barbell upright rows. I was only required to do one set, which I was thankful for 'cause those air squats had my legs all jello-like. When I was done with my set the coach gave me a 10 minute private stretching session and I was free to go.

Three days later and I can still feel the warm glow of muscles building in my thighs. I can't wait for my next session!
