Ran 3.6 Today and an Interesting Update for Work

My laptop battery is really low. I’m going to have to save frequently if I expect to keep from losing this blog. I’m sitting at the kids’ gymnastics lesson right now. This is my typical Monday and Wednesday night.
Today I went for a run around my base (I work on an Air Force base). I didn’t start my run until almost 11. That was a mistake. It wasn’t as hot as it’s been lately, but it was probably still in the low 80s when I started. I also didn’t have my running hat and there’s no shade along my route. So I was hot. I didn’t bring water either.
Initially I planned to run 4 miles or more. But as I was running my route back I realized I’d be short of that goal. By then I decided I didn’t care and just wanted to get back to my bldg. I was slower than I’d have liked. I ran a 12:12. I’ve told myself it’s the heat, but I’m fairly consistently turning in a 12 min mile lately, even early in the morning (no heat). So I think I may just be letting myself settle into a comfy slow pace.
I’m not sure if my Achilles are really ready for the strain of speed workouts and hills though. Right now my method is run farther so that when I run the 1.5 I can speed up on the slower distance and be able to handle it. It’s a method, but it’s not best all by itself.
My weight continues its steady decline. I’m seeing the 192’s now. I’m feeling more like my old self and I’m surprised when I look in the mirror and still see my 190-something self. My uniform pants fit much better, but still tighter than I’d like. Same with the uniform blouse.
I have my Air Force physical this month and I’ll have to explain to the doctor that while I’m still overweight I’m making good progress and am exercising just fine.
I’m going to go run with the women’s early morning group tomorrow. I suspect I’ll be slow again, this time because I ran today.
I now have both Monday and Tuesday off from work. I wish I’d known in advance I’d have a 4 day weekend. I might have gone camping. Maybe it’s not too late if I can find a local campground with space. I could take the kids to school on Tuesday morning and return to the campground to break it down.
I’ve been having an interesting time at work lately. In my old job it was unreasonable deadlines for software builds, constant replanning and rebaselining contracts as the government agency we worked for had their funding cut, and the stress of 5 years of constant layoffs. In my current job I’m back in the military and have no threat of layoff – though we do have constant lack of funding for the first 3/4 of each year (to suddenly have windfalls in the last couple months of the FY due to a lack of reasonable planning) I definitely have more personnel-related drama to deal with. Last year we lost a guy for drinking Coca Tea (tea made from cocaine leaves). This year I stumbled across a guy that was using his government-issued credit card in strip clubs (don’t worry, he didn’t stick the government with the bill. He was still responsible for paying it off, and did.) The funniest part is that while he was trying to say he didn’t notify us of his conviction from his DUI case because he’d only just found out he’d been convicted I discovered he’d charged his home-confinement ankle bracelet to his government credit card 9 months earlier. Just plain WOW! I’m not making any of this up. This is not heard it from a friend of a friend. I saw the credit card statements and I discovered who the company was. For your information, if you wind up with home-confinement you have to pay for your own ankle bracelet. And it costs $350. Both those pieces of information were completely new to me.
So there you go… a snippet of information about my life unrelated to working out and eating.
