The start of the Spring 5% Challenge is just 12 days away! As I think about why I joined the challenge this spring, I realize it is not just about weight loss. Yes, I do want and need to lose 5% of my weight during these upcoming 8 weeks, but I know I will gain some things, too. Here's what I look forward to gaining:
1) Self discipline -- "Discipline" is not a popular word. But, as a college professor once told our class, "There is freedom in discipline." I don't like feeling out of control about my eating, about poor sleep habits, about irregular exercise patterns. I feel much better if I give up my right to do "anything I want" and instead discipline myself to do what is best for me. There really is a sense of freedom that comes when my lazy body is not the boss.
2) Muscles! -- In 6 months, I want to be able to able to hike the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim trail carrying a backpack. That is a huge goal, and I know that I am not physically ready to do it right now, but after 8 weeks of intentional strength training and healthy food, I will be much closer.
3) Friends -- It is fun to be encouraged by others and to get to encourage them back. The people on my team really matter to me, and I am rooting for all of them to reach their goals. Some will remain my friends long after the Challenge is finished.
4) New knowledge -- It's amazing how much I learn during a Challenge. For example -- new recipes, new foods to try, new workout videos, new research on weight loss, exercise, sleep, stress management... I come out smarter than I started.
So you see, it's not just about losing weight. In fact, the gains might outweigh the losses. Think about joining! Here's the link.
