PERCEPTIONS can be dangerous

Ingrained perceptions can be VERY powerful things to break. Case in point. There are many people in this county of far west Texas, that grew up as children in the fifties, and late sixties, when the electric power conglomerates were pushing electric power, as the "New, Clean, Safe, and Modern" way to be. (Remember the all the "Clean, Flameless Electric Heat" commercials on T.V., and the print media that were pushing the concept of a very inefficient heat source as the way to heat the homes in America)? They also pushed electric stoves and water heaters as well, they didn't care about the inefficiency, that only made the power companies more money.
What all of this DID was inculcate what was then, the "next generation", with the mindset that people that did not have homes that were all electric, were to be pitied.
Fast forward to the last thirty years, when the children of the afore mentioned generation's kids started the Green movement, and now, many of"The Baby Boomers" truly pity those of us that CHOOSE to live off the grid, running our homes with renewable sources of energy. They seem to think that we are "too Poor" to be hooked to the grid.
TEESTER2 and I hear this in one form or another very often, from the "Gridders" as we like to call them.
Today was the 13th time that area around the local farming community has lost power. TEESTER2 and I were in El Paso all day, and we came home on the tail of a strong squall line. On our way home, we remarked, that we hoped that everyone didn't lose their power again.
It turns out that they did, and they are sitting in the dark, with no phone service, no computers, and no refrigeration, cooking, or heat.
A week from now, they will all be feeling sorry for us that did not lose a thing, because of our renewable power systems.
That brings me to all of my Spark Friends. How many of you still have the old "Clean Plate Club" mentality going off in your heads? It may be time to make a clean break from outmoded ways of thinking, that are holding you back from healthier living.
