One year on Tuesday

Friday, March 16, 2018

Today I saw my orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Christine Pui, for my one year check up after my knee replacement surgery. First of all, I can't believe it's been a whole year. Second, I can't believe I can do so many things I hadn't been able to do for YEARS! I guess I pretty much gave up when things got too hard.

I passed with flying colors. In fact, I am so much better than ever that even I can't believe it. One thing I wanted to ask her about was that sometimes I feel like I'm hyper-extending my right knee. It certainly goes back further than the left knee, and than it ever did before. After checking me out she said the difference is that I can actually straighten my right leg, my left leg doesn't completely straighten. I remember how Jerusha (my wonderful physical therapist) kept telling me that I had to straighten my leg - it was important that I work on that. Apparently I did without even realizing.

The other thing I learned is that because of my efforts to stretch and strengthen my muscles, I have actually loosened my ligaments just a bit - which means my knee crunches when I do Pilates. That's pretty much the only time it happens. She said she could put in a larger knee - NOPE, I'll deal with the crunching, or stop doing Pilates!

So I am done. Of course, if anything ever feels wrong I will have to go in to have it checked out. I am not 100% me anymore. But I am so much better than me - I wonder if that's how the Bionic Woman felt! Hopefully with all this strengthening and stretching I can avoid having the other knee done indefinitely. My mom never had the other knee done and she managed to get around just fine.

So my knee replacement journey is complete and I thank each and every one of you wonderful spark friends for helping me through!

You give me hope. I've been using your suggestions and working on improving my balance. There are some days when just walking around the house gives me fits. The ortho doc says that much of my problems are caused by the herniated discs in my lower back. Surgery, which he suggested, in not a choice. At least right now.

So glad to read that you are better than you were before the surgery. Bionic Woman you indeed are.
Warmer weather will arrive (some day) and you'll be out there planting your garden.

Have a wonderful weekend! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Thank you for sharing this. I am having total knee replacement surgery in two weeks. I have put this off for years, I had both hips replaced because they were so bad, and then a year and a half ago, I needed to have my first hip ball and lining replaced because of infection. It is reassuring to me to hear when people have good results with their replacements. I'm feeling confident that my knee replacement is going to go well and that I will be able to walk without pain.

Congrats on the great report for your one year check-up after knee surgery, you have done well. Yup, if not having any problem with the knee I wouldn't have a bigger one put in either--to go through all that once again.

It’s very reassuring that you’re doing so well, I am scheduled for my left knee replacement in June. I’m scared but I’ve needed this for years now and my knees are really not working well anymore. I’m very happy for you 😊

I had my right knee replaced last November so I am still recuperating. This past month my knee has been "tight" and the exercises don't seem to help as much so I'm not sure what's going on. I think maybe I need to use a therapeutic bike like I did in rehab. I can't use a regular bike since my knees won't bend that much. Maybe3 it's the weather! I started noticing it after we got back from Florida. I have an ortho appt in about three weeks so I'll be checking with him then. I'm glad to hear you are doing so well!

Its so wonderful to read how well you are doing one year post. I recall some of your blogs right after surgery and you have come so far. I hope you never have to get the other one done! Pilates and I never got along-always bothered my knees or my back, but I used a video and never learned from an instructor using the proper form.

Excellent. The rehab made all the difference for my right knee replacement as well! And need to have the left one done. NOT looking forward to that, but I know the drill, so it's not as scary as the first time 'round.

    Congratulations and continued good luck.
