Baconfest and Beach Day - then birthday party!

We had so much fun yesterday! We went to Baconfest (yep, there was bacon-wrapped and bacon flavoured EVERYTHING!) and then to the beach.

Baconfest was a healthy eating nightmare! We had planned to eat when we got there. So we walked up and down the festival, to check out all the food offerings. I finally settled on some panfried pierogies - they were boiled first, so soft and not greasy. They were delicious! And a small portion, so not too bad on the daily calorie count. Better than the bacon wrapped donuts and maple bacon cheeseburgers my companions got.

It was quite the experience! We were glad that we went early because it was super busy and really hot, even though we left before 11 am. We headed straight to the beach and what a day for the beach! Hot and hazy and sunny and breezy and wonderful! It was so hot that we all ventured to the beach bar for afternoon hydration. I had 3 beers and 5 big glasses of water and I passed on all the garlic bread and nachos my companions ordered. I know - who am I right???? That even surprised me!

However, the unstable weather caused some dangerous water conditions. The lifeguards were flying red flags and they kept making announcements about dangerous riptides. My sister and I are excellent swimmers and we knew better than to go out into the deeper water. We stayed in knee deep water and waves were hitting us in the shoulders/neck range. If we went out any further, it was difficult to maintain control when the waves receded.

We still got the play in the water and cool off, without any risk. We were amazed at the people out in deep water and people who let their children out in the deep water - without parents. Poor lifeguards were fishing them out often. We actually saw an ambulance come screaming up to the main lifeguard station while we were in the beach restaurant enjoying dinner. I hope everyone was okay!

And that brings me to dinner! We saw the wind sheer change and you could feel the barometer drop, so we packed up our stuff, put it in the car and walked over for dinner. On the way over the wind blew up so badly that there was a sand storm. You couldn't move, just had to cover your eyes and face away from it. But we made it to our favourite little spot - nothing to look at from outside but so tasty!

You can't go to Lake Erie and not have perch! I like this particular restaurant because they have the lightest batter ever - it is lighter than Shake and Bake on chicken breast. And of course I had some fries with it. Also had salad and double veggies - less fries. And no bread and diet Pepsi and water to drink. It was superb!

On the way home, the storms intensified and we had to pull over twice because you couldn't see to drive. But we made it home safely and then we headed out to a birthday party. A longtime friend was having a party at the local airport, in a reconditioned hanger that the Air Force Cadets use for training. It turned out quite nice! There were potato chips on the table and I did not eat one! There was SO MUCH food at this party - it was literally everywhere. Cakes and cookies and pastries (I didn't even go to that table) and grilled food and snack food - just so much. Around 11 pm, my hubby asked me to make him deli meat on a bun. I decided to have one too.

I entered everything into the tracker and it wasn't as bad as I expected! I was only over by 100 calories for the day. And I walked a lot - over 12,000 steps. So in summary, not a stellar day but I am happy with what I did right. I thought about what my companions for the day ate and I how I politely declined so much of it. I had just as great a day as I would have if I ate all the other stuff. And I slept like a baby after all the walking and the sun and fresh air and being in the water (fighting the waves take a LOT out of you!)
