This challenge is keeping me sane

Thursday, October 31, 2019

Such a challenging week! My mom had a stroke on Friday, didn't call to tell us until Sunday, and I flew to Ohio Monday to be with her and oversee her care.

I'm staying alone in her apartment while she's at the care facility. No family to cook for, no usual routine to follow. Thank goodness for the Fall 5% Challenge! I know if I weren't following the challenge guidelines, I wouldn't be taking care of myself at all. I'd be missing meals, eating junk food out of stress, watching tv instead of taking a walk, and just generally stressing out.

Instead, I'm doing my best under trying circumstances to meet my challenge commitments.. I'm eating healthy, getting in my fitness minutes (even if it means going out after dark and walking in the rain, as it has the past two nights), writing every bite in my food journal, measuring portions, and in general being mindful of my own health, not just my mom's.

This is giving me so much more energy than I would otherwise have had. When I first found out I had to fly back to Ohio, I thought my challenge would go right out the window, but I've been determined to stay focused on healthy habits as I help my mom get better.

Thank you, Sparkpeople!
