Encourage Yourself

Yes, I like the SparkPeople community. I use SparkCoach. I read the articles and blogs. But I also do one other, key action to bring out better results: I encourage myself, I’m my own cheer leader. That seems selfish, maybe cocky. Not everyone is ready to admit that we put choices of food into us - a lifestyle choice. ... to admit that we determine when, how far, and with what intensity / range of motion we’ll move - another lifestyle choice. I was at a function, and I knew that, if I didn’t move right then and there, I would miss my movement goal for the day: keeping a month-long streak was on the line. So I announced to everyone at the small room function: “I’m going to be walking in place... I have to [I choose to do this], so I hope it doesn’t bother you.” Some people who have known about my fervor in maintaining healthy habits just chuckled; others just shook their heads. But I did meet my goal that day - and I’m just a few days away from meeting my monthly goal streak (another program, not SparkPeople).
Four years ago, I wouldn’t have dreamed of, wouldn’t have considered such a thing. Two years ago, when I was participating in a healthy living workshop, I told the presenter before the session started that I would be taking regular movement breaks, and I didn’t want to be “rude”. And I had to take that time (for myself) when attending to the needs of a family member because, there weren’t any other alternatives. So here we are, present moment. I still feel awkward, but this is what I am doing for me, even if that isn’t the norm for the majority of people around me. I encourage myself - I tell myself: “You go!” Because, that way, the job gets done - even if it took four years to recognize and act on what it takes to achieve the consistency to move on a regular basis, irrespective of the context or physical surroundings.
