Common Ground #3

Sunday, February 28, 2021

Last time I talked about how YOU AND I are the commodities that advertisers pay money for, and how all purveyors of news have a vested interest in catching and keeping your attention.

Before moving on, I want to clarify that this actually applies to public media as well. Anyone who has ever watched a PBS “Pledge” knows that WHEN you pledge your donation matters to the folks who program those stations.

Really, the only news sources that are divorced from this kind of model are channels like CSPAN, which continue to broadcast their feed even if NO ONE is watching.

So let’s get back to finding Common Ground.

Again, I want to emphasize that to speak to people who disagree with us, we have to find the areas where we CAN agree. I’m not talking about trolls who just want to agitate for the sake of agitation. I’m talking about your family, friends, and neighbors, who, believe it or not, actually CRAVE your respect.

Thought For The Day: Try to remember a time when someone else taught YOU something that changed your world view of an issue. I will bet that they weren’t finger-wagging or lecturing you. What was it that reached you?

[These thoughts are JUST starting points. Talking to people who have been fed a diet of lies for years will take a lot of time, but it's essential work if we aren't willing to live in a failed democracy.]
