Hi, I am Peggy, short for nothing because my mom just wanted to call me Peggy, so that is what she named me.
I use DeaconPeg online because I was commissioned as a congregational deacon in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in April 1996. I served my 3 year commitment in my local church. I have continued to live my life making a difference in the lives of people I meet.
I also married in 1996 for the first, and only, time. My husband ended up having cancer and we only had 20 months together. His love continues to make me smile to this day.
I worked at Xerox for 31 years, starting out as a data clerk and ending up coding the computers who took over my job. I retired after my husband died and took a job at a local university as a customer service representative in the financial aid department.
I met a wonderful man online in 2002 and we spent 14 years together before he died of cancer in 2016.
I now live in an Independent Senior Community where they provide 3 meals a day. I have a nice studio apartment with weekly housekeeping, WiFi, cable TV, and all my utilities included in the monthly rent. The laundry room is 2 doors away and the washing machine doesn't need to be fed quarters to clean my clothes.

Nice to meet you all.

Hi! My name is Ann. I saw this active team with some familiar names in it & decided to join. I'm in the process of trying to gain back some weight I lost after being sick. I have been at an unhealthy weight. What better place than here, where I'm familiar with how everything works. Thanks!

Hi Elizabeth, I'm glad you're on the team and best place to get to know us all is on the chat thread. Though we're not big on challenges, we do love to chat. There are also other threads, take a look at them and join in on any/all that you like.

The pandemic has changed the way we used to live but it sounds like you have lots to do to fill in time with all the store closures and quarantines. I'd love to see some of the quilted ornaments that you make, that sounds unique.

Check over our threads and join in any that suits you. I try to see that we have a variety on our team. Come on the chat thread, tell us a bit about you, get to know us. I look forward to seeing you there!

Hi I'm Elizabeth and I've been popping in and out.
Live in Vermont and originally a New Yorker. Happily retired for 6 years and was enjoying it until the quarantines. married with 4 grown kiddo's across the country. a bunch of Grands and a cat. Since retirement we've taken a couple leisurely drives across country visiting family and friends. since I use to live in an Air Force town, know people spread far & wide.
During the last year have been reading lots more, making folded quilted ornaments, and finishing a lot of other projects. Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Hi Geri, so glad you chose to join our team, I know you're going to love being with us. We're a group of friendly, helpful, supportive ladies and we welcome you to chat with us on the chat thread.

Since you're not new to SP, you'll already know what it's about so no need for me to explain how this site works. It's a really good site though for gaining a healthy lifestyle.

I don't do any special diets but try to eat mostly healthy foods in small portion and move my body every day. We aren't really into challenges as you would have seen on the Team's info but we do like to share our days, our ups and downs.

Welcome aboard, I'm so glad to have you with us!

Hi AZ2WIBARB, can we can you Barb to make it shorter for us? emoticon I'm so glad you decided to join SP and have chosen to join our team, I'm sure you'll like being with us. We are a group of very friendly, helpful, supportive women. We aren't big on challenges but we do like to talk about our days, our ups and downs, so please join us on the chat thread.

Sparks sometimes seems overwhelming to new members, that's because there is so much you can read on the site. Believe me when I say it's the best healthy lifestyle site on the net, best one to join. Do read people's blogs, they can be so inspiring. Read all the info you can. But best of all, enjoy being here!

Wishing you all the best and hope to meet you on the chat thread too!

Good morning! I have completed my first week with SparkPeople and am so glad I have joined. What I need is motivation to stop procrastinating and get out there and walk - and SparkPeople has helped me with that so far. We are moving back to Wisconsin in a few few months, and I need to get in better shape to be able to keep up with our 3 grandsons!

emoticon Vertualwalker, glad to have you on the team. Odd how sometimes we go to get something fixed then our whole body gets out of whack! Not a great thing to happen and I hope the doctor appts this year find they can help you better.

I saw on your page how much you walk or was that before the surgery?

Join us on the threads, we don't really do challenges, that doesn't seem to interest this group but chatting and friendship is great!

I ask new members if there is a name we could call you by, rather than saying your username. It doesn't have to be your real name if you prefer it that way, it's just that it makes it easier when responding to your posts.

I saw you on the chat thread and thanks for jumping right in! Again, welcome to the team!

Well, I'm sure glad you chose to join the team. We're friendly, supportive and we encourage one another.

We are all struggling with our weight so you're in good company. Healthy eating in small portions, moving our bodies is the way to lose excessive weight but . . along comes goodies or/and bigger portions or/and not moving our body and Walla, no weight loss. So easy to say what we should do but so difficult to stick with it.

Join us and together we'll do this! Come on the chat thread and tell us about your day and a bit about you, you're very welcome here.

emoticon to our team. I too have chronic health issues and also mobility issue - I have atrophied muscles in my left leg and it is painful to walk on it but walk I must, in order to stay mobile. I use a walker when I go out but do fine without it in my apartment.

We need to be happy and healthy as we can be. An upbeat, positive attitude is the best attitude to have as we journey through life. I live alone but keep a smile on my face - ever notice that you absolutely cannot frown when you are smiling? A smile also makes you feel good and we need to feel good every single day.

Come on the chat thread with us, I think you'd like being there. Our team is more for chatting and friendship than challenges so please feel at home with us.

May 2021 be a great year for all of us!

Welcome Joyce, I spent a night in Florence back in 1977 and then drove up the coast to Newport where I spent a few days beach combing and relaxing. I visited the Sea Lion Caves on the way. It was a memorable trip.

emoticon Hi Wyndy, welcome from another Canadian. I live in southwestern Ontario and you'll find we now have several others who live in Canada, on the team. I know about arthritis, I have a crippled thumb and have it almost everywhere but my knees bother me the most. We really need good knees to support our weight so losing a few pounds will help us. We can support each other along the way and do our best to stay on the path.

Gringuita: Thanks for the post....another Canadian! And a son in Denver! Me too!! You're lucky to be closer, though. There are no direct flights from Nova Scotia so that's weighing on my mind as I get older...I'm fine to do it but my brain is starting to balk. :)
With a new team, it's a challenge to match up Sign-ins with real names. It will come eventually. Have a great day!

Welcome, Sandra,

I, too, am a Canadian. I grew up in Ontario but am now living in Alberta. I have also lived in BC but we are now settled in the area where we raised our kids. Our daughter and her wife live nearby but our son and his family are in the Denver area.

Since everybody's body is different you'll find that everyone on this team is on a different eating plan. We all have to find what works for us as individuals.

Hi Sandra and welcome to our team. We have such caring, supportive friends on here, from all over. I live in Canada also, in south western Ontario. As Judy said, we have a chat thread and come on there daily or whenever we wish, we offer an ear so we can vent, talk about our day, future plans, etc., anything you wish to chat about.

I'm so sorry to hear about your brother and you're a good sister to be there for him, as well as his partner. He does sound like he is used to being independent and is a strong person. Keep us posted about him on the chat thread.

It's a great way to go about choosing teams, having balance with two of them! I hope you find what you want/need on our team and the other one that you joined. We give you our listening ears and at times, our tips and advice, if you want it.

Looking forward to meeting and greeting you on the threads. Again, welcome to our team!

Judy: Thank you for your welcome reply. My brother and partner took a trip to Orangeville this past week...maybe/probably his last trip there to see our sister and her family. -Sandra. Zeedra is a fun name which I play with. A friend who I correspond with in Ottawa and I are always using different names just for the fun of it. I couldn't live without humour!

Hi Sandra, I am from Nova Scotia although I now live in Ontario and have for longer than I lived in Nova Scotia but once a Nova Scotian, always a Nova Scotian.

This is a nice team to belong to. There is a 'chat' thread where we check on each other every few days or even daily if you feel up to it.

I imagine the last few months have been stressful but we are here to offer long-distance hugs or a listening ear whenever you feel up to sharing.

Welcome to the team.

Hello,
I've decided to join two teams to help me restart, reboot...and all the words associated with try, try again. I am on the last leg of supporting my brother and his partner. He was told he had cancer about 16 months ago. He's gone through everything including what I consider a barbaric operation. He's a very strong, determined and passionate person. He doesn't want help. He says: "Just love me." His partner and I are the only ones he wants around with a few exceptions. So, that is part of why I'm here. It's been very stressful, along with the COVID-19 roadblocks.

Now I'm at a point where I can see that I'm not needed as often until something else happens. He seems to be coasting right now. I live alone and have not been using all my extra time to do things not related to my brother and it's okay to do that.

With the other group, I will concentrate on the fitness aspect. Starting today I went back to walk on the track in my nearby fitness centre. I can't walk in the heat...just never was comfortable in the heat.

With this group I would like to latch on to some positive sharing on healthy eating habits and positive use of time for lifestyle, friendships, personal, etc.....a balance.

I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada. As I like writing, I'll try to reign myself in so as not to have a few sentences turn into a book.

Have a great weekend, all!

Welcome Margo,

My advice is to cut out all sugar and starch (including high carb veggies). I know a friend who had weight loss surgery and she had to lose a certain amount of weight before she could have the surgery and the doctor put her on a very strict lowcarb plan. She did lose the weight and was able to have the back surgery that she needed after that. I don't necessarily recommend weight loss surgery (I declined when it was mentioned to me) but lowcarb is a great way to go.

Everyone's body is different though and it takes a lot of experimentation to find what works for you.

Welcome to the team Margo! 30 pounds is my goal also and I know how difficult it is to lose as we do eat for comfort and we're going through difficult times at the moment.

May I suggest sitting down on Sundays and planning your meals for the entire coming week. Make sure to allow for snacks for those times when you need some comfort food and make them as healthy as possible. Try including loads of veggies with your lunches and dinners; steamed, roasted, salads, etc. They are filling and also healthy, good for you.

Also, try getting right into a hobby, something that really interests you and will keep your hands and mind busy. Even reading takes your mind off food if you have interesting books.

Read plenty of blogs on SP, they always help me, and ask questions on our chat thread, I'm sure the ladies will try to answer and help you there also.

I'm glad you chose to join our team, come on in on the threads, make yourself at home!

Hi Well, not exactly new Ö.but I've been gone so long that I feel likenew. I just happened to stumble onto the team this evening and it is just what I need right now in my life so I am going to stay here and be here every day that I am at home.

I found my 'old' pic on the 3rd pg of pictures so I know I've been here long ago---I just got involved in other things and forgot to come back here to this wonderful team of great people.

I am a senior citizen, married 63 years to a wonderful man who still lives with me in Charlotte, NC. We dearly love each other and are regular church members--DH is a former pastor, but at his age, is semi-retired-he often preaches for those who go on vacation etc.

I am really anxious to get back here tomorrow and 'visit' with team members.

See you then team.

Till tomorrow

Hi Anne, welcome to our team.

How great that was, to own your own business and it sounds like a big one. That must have kept you busy.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your beloved husband, it is something we never get over, we miss them dearly and constantly.

It sounds good that your daughter has moved in with you, gives you company and how about that, you each have shelties, such sweet dogs! I had chihuahuas, tiny bundles of love. I only have a canary now.

I'm glad that you chose to join our team and you're very welcome with us. We have a nice group of ladies here, they are supportive and friendly. Come on the chat thread, tell us some about you there too and also get to know us. I'm sure you'll like being with us.

Welcome Judith from Judy (although my formal name is Judith). You mention making lap blankets for hospice. I work with a small group of ladies who make small quilts for our hospice residents. My Tuesday morning partner on the reception desk works with ladies who knit and crochet slippers and lap blankets. Keeping our hands busy helps keep them away from unnecessary snacks. emoticon

Hi Judith, welcome to our team! You are brand new on Sparks I believe? Just take your time getting around it, it's huge, absorb all you can by reading the Sparks articles, members blogs, etc. Don't feel overwhelmed, we're all the same when we first start on this site, it takes time to know what you're doing.

First thing I'd suggest is to join teams that suit you, suit your needs, you'll find what you want by joining them and joining in on the conversations, threads, etc.

We aren't strong on challenge on our team but we do love to chat and we have games to lighten our day - it doesn't have to all be spent by watching our weight and exercising.
emoticon

Congrats on how well you've done to get some weight off! Keep up the good work!

Most of us on the team are alone, having lost our mates, etc., so we know what you mean. Food really tempts me when I sit here watching TV or just thinking! Don't forbid any food, just watch the calories you take in. I've been knitting lately, that keeps my hands and mind occupied. I'm sure you find the same while you crochet.

So again, Welcome to our team. Come on our Chat thread, tell us a bit about you there, get to know us. We're a friendly, supportive group and we welcome you!

I have been on abs off Spark for a long time. I am back again and feel this time Iíll stay. I donít really know what to say. I need to lose weight and exercise daily to keep the osteoarthritis at bay. It hurts of course but I want to keep as mobile as I can.
I just retired last July and love doing crafts. Learning to knit on a loom and have started sewing clothes for my Teddybear. Heís part Maltese and part Pomeranian. Just as little guy. Heís the mascot for our fry truck we run from spring to the fall.

Hi Mary, I'm very glad you chose our team to join. We're all like-minded, trying to lose weight be active. It doesn't really involve much to belong to a team - you can join in on any or all threads that interest you or sit back and just read the posts. I'd encourage you to join our chat thread because that's where you'll get to know the members, receive tips, encouragement and support. Remember, you're not alone in this struggle.

The more you get involved in a team and with it's members, the more you'll get out of it. It's up to you and I sure look forward to meeting and greeting you on the threads. Give it a try, I'm sure you'll enjoy being with us, we're a friendly group.

By the way, your spark page is marked private and we won't be able to get in and see it. Did you know? It's okay if you wish to keep it private but if you make it public, we can come in to leave you goodies and comments, etc.

Hi All,
I am new - never been on a Spark Team before - not sure what it involves really. My name is Mary and live in Massachusetts. I'm 72 years old and in good health. But I'm very overweight and sedentary and struggle off and on with trying to change both of those conditions. Here we go again!.

emoticon to the team Roz! I think you and I belonged to a same team a few years back -- Classy 70's -- are you still on that one?

We're not big on exercise, we can generally get that on other teams but we love to chat, great at supporting and helping one another and we enjoy sharing our days. We do like games and have several on the go, plus we have a 'question of the day' that Carol puts on, always interesting. Good recipes thread and we welcome any you'd like to share with us.

Come in on any/all threads that you wish, they're there for you.

Welcome to the team, I look forward to once again getting to know you.

emoticon to the team CEEJAYC. Like you, I had a health issue all the month of April (severe bronchitis) which really almost put a halt to my walking. When it started getting better, it was like starting all over, difficult to walk far.

If I have it figured right, you're still 30 lbs down and that's awesome! Just eating healthy & small portions will help you get that off again, may take a while but it will happen. Keep on doing all that you can ... recording your food intake is a good thing to do. You'll get back on track, never give up!

We share a lot of common things on this team, a lot are because of being seniors but keep going and you're going to get there. I know you can do it!

Hi all! I am new to this team but not to SparkPeople. I joined years ago and am a classic yoyo dieter. Last year I lost 50+ pounds on Optifast, but gained 20+ back. I've had some health issues this spring (nothing serious) that have forced me to be more inactive than I'd like to be, so exercise isn't much of an option, but I'm logging in daily, recording my food intake, and trying to keep my spark streaks going.

I live in Florida, and lost my hubby 16 years ago next month. I have 3 adult children and 3 granddaughters who all live close by, and am very busy! I'll turn 70 at the end of August and want to get as healthy as I can. Getting my weight down is a big part of that. My doctor really scolded me last week so I'm finally trying to get back on track. I know I can do this...it will be easier when I can walk more and work outside. It's pretty hot for that right now, so I'd settle for going to LA Fitness and maybe swimming (slowly) some laps. When it cools off I hope to go bike riding...I couldn't on my vacation last month because I was in too much pain.

It will be nice to hear from people who share common challenges and I can always use encouragement and suggestions!

LIFE is short.

FORGIVE quickly,
LAUGH uncontrollably, and
NEVER REGRET ANYTHING

emoticon to the team Dolly! Is it okay to call you Dolly or do you have another name you'd prefer?

It seems that many of us decide to take care of our weight in our senior years and I think that is wise. We want to make the best of our remaining years. I'm pre-diabetic also and losing some weight would surely help with that.

Come on the threads, jump right in and in no time you'll feel right at home and you'll get to know other women on our team. We're supportive, helpful and friendly.

I look forward to meeting you on the chat thread. I'm pleased you decided to join our team ... see you there!

Hello, I am 79 and have been a widow for 13 years. I live in the Midwest U.S. I am active and most people think that I am 60 and they are shocked when I tell them that I am 79. I have 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandsons
I think this sounds like a good group.
I have fought weight my entire life - 2 years ago, after seeing the Dr. I decided that I had better work on getting this weight off. I am prediabetic - so far my A1C count is good and I need no medication, just diet.
I decided that I do not want to take medication for my Psoriatic Arthritis - with eating no sugar and no flour, I manage to keep the inflammation out of my body and so far no meds for that.
I lost 35 pounds and need to lose another 100. Hoping Spark People can keep me motivated

Welcome LUVS2BIKE. I enjoy my bicycle too.

I live in Harrow which is close to Windsor which is across the river from Detroit, Michigan. I also make quilts. Mine are for our local hospice. Each new resident will find a small quilt and comfort bear on their bed when they move in.

My exciting news is that our oldest granddaughter will make me a great-grandmother in November. It is such a wonderful time for you and I as we anticipate what the future will bring (and all the other grands and great-grands.) Yes, we want to be healthy so that we can fully enjoy our new little ones.

Hello, everyone! And special greetings to our Canadian Sparkers on this glorious Canada Day! I am from New York State and have been a Sparker since June 2010. As you can see from my Spark name, I LOVE to bike! I find the key to happiness is to have God in your life and to be active in the world He created for us while helping our neighbor. As an avid quilter, I enjoy making quilts for Project Linus, a non-profit organization that provides homemade blankets to children in need. I'm 65 years old and a soon-to-be grandmother for the first time. I'm so grateful and excited! SparkPeople keeps me in check on my journey to better health so I may enjoy my future more with my grandchild.

Best wishes to all our Canadian Sparkers! May you enjoy a healthy and safe day celebrating!

Keep Sparking!

Hi Gloria, My name is Virginia and I live in Vermont, which explains my username VAinVT. Not a lifelong resident by any means, but I love the beauty here and the fact that many residents - young and old - are physically active. SP helps me stay on track with food and exercise, so I am grateful for the opportunity to join a group of people who continue to try to stay healthy.

emoticon to our team, MOMTOLJ! So glad you chose to join us and it's good to see you here. Yes, you're in the right place. This is where newbies introduce themselves and also, our team is for anyone over 70 (or close to 70 & over).

We do our own individual exercising and follow whatever diet/food plan that suits us. But we're not a team into challenges. We're more into chatting, being supportive, encouraging, etc. I think you'll like being here.

I read your post on the chat thread and was so pleased that you joined us there! Having your own exercise machine, any one of them, in your home, is a huge help. That means you can get on it whenever you wish, whenever you have the chance. Awesome!

Again, welcome to our team and if you choose to let us know your name or something shorter we can call you, that would be great too!

See you on the threads!
