Boy, tag4me you have more willpower than I did when I was working I would just get going good and someone would show up with a favorite food, or suggest getting take out from one of my favorite restaurants. There goes the diet can't resist!

Hi All: I just joined this team. I'm a 911 calltaker/dispatcher/radio operator for the Pinellas County Public Safety PSAP in Florida. I've been here for just under 10 years and gained at least 30 lbs during that time. Since June 16, I've been sticking to my Sparkpeople program of logging in my meals and exercise daily and trying to stay at about 1200 calories per day. I'm down about 30 lbs with my motivation being my daughter's wedding in three weeks. I hope to continue on this program after the wedding with the hope of dropping at least another 30 lbs. As we all know, this particular job is not conducive to losing weight. I've been sitting on an exercise ball instead of a chair and standing/moving around/stretching as much as I can during my shift. I figure any amount of calories I burning doing this will help. I also try to hit the gym (or treadmill at home) at least 4 days per week, but it's not something I enjoy doing so just about any excuse can be turned into justification for not working out. We work 8 and 12 hour shifts with 30 minutes off for lunch. We're fortunate to have a fitness center on site at work - with really old equipment, but at least we have it available to us. I'll stop babbling now, but look forward to reaching my goals with you. :-)

Terri

We have 12 hour shifts so minus the lunchbreak, 11 hours at one desk is way too long to sit. We sometimes go without chairs and raise our desks all the way up for at least a little bit. Our headsets are on long cords that act like leashes so we can at least wander a bit.

Sitting for 8hours plus most days, especially when some of the adrenal rushes you can get is really hard on the body and the mind. I know Orofino is in northern Idaho. How far from Lewiston which I believe is in Potlatch County.

I'm up to the North a ways...lol Most people have no clue where it is but I'm in Orofino Clearwater county. I've been dispatching right at a year now. I really enjoy it but the sitting all day is a killer.

Hello Everyone,
I am new to the team of course and am excited to hear different ideas on how to get in shape and stay in shape with a sit down job! We just got new desks in our dispatch center and they actually raise so I can stand, so for the last few nights I've been doing that. Now I am thinking I need to do something more while just standing here, any ideas? Thanks for they help!
Holly
