I'm a full time writer so I guess I'm both, too. If I don't finish my books, then I can't sell them and I can't eat. :) But I love writing and I can't imagine going back to biology work again.

Do you do writing as a must do job or do you really like writing? Myself? Both. I like the pay so I may buy what I want/need yet I like the learning aspect.

The article I am writing tonight is on How To Find The Time To Write. I have come up with about 12 ways myself, now am needing to research the rest.

What are you writing about today?

I'm rating my writing projects as SUPER! Because if they weren't, why would I want to publish them, ya know?

Hello there!

What have you writers been up to? Rate your writing projects: Super? So-so? Nada?

My on-line women's magazine job has come to a halt. The website has shut down, leaving we writers without pay. The founder said we would be paid. Nada. He said to e-mail him with any questions or concerns. Does he return e-mails? Nope. What would you do? Any tips would be appreciated.

I have been doing side hustles and stressing myself out.

Over the weekend and yesterday, I did mucho applications. I really want one position where I would be a health coach on-line. My runner-up choice is to be an on-line tutor. I have applied to Aim 4 A, Cambly, etc. Wish me luck!

So, that is what has been happening in my life. How about you?

Audible is a lifesaver for those of us who commute. I've probably "read" two books a month five or six years now!

Hey there!

I joined this team a while ago, but have been inactive a long time, and I'm finally trying to dip my toe in, so do you mind if join the conversation?

I've been *trying* to write a novel for many years now. It has a sort-of strong female main character. No one thinks she is strong, including herself. but she is, and proves it as she puts herself in danger to help others. The "many years" is because of massive plot hole I keep getting lost in, and life... But I digress. Oh, and I write on paper, by the way...

Romance...? I always thought of a romance novel as a paperback with Fabio on the cover, and lots graphic sex scenes on the inside.

Is that what you are talking about?

When I was a kid I loved gothic stuff. Not explicit... now I'm into anything dystopian.

But I do enjoy other kinds of romance, not so much for the romance, but for the WORLD BUILDING (do I sound excited?) - and I have many paranormal romance SERIES that I just adore! (I belong to Audible because I have a long commute, and this is life-saving stuff!) :D

Seriously, check out (in no particular order) Dakota Cassidy;s Witchless in Seattle and Accidentally Paranormal, Sofie Kelly's Magical Cats, Kristen Painter's Nocturne Falls, Robyn Peterman's Fashionably Dead, JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood... And I have a pile in my wish list...!

Oh, and where can I get some french toast?! Yum!!!!! I'm starving here!
Happy Friday!

-Marla

I think women discovering their inner and outer strengths are great topics for any genre - romance, fantasy, even thrillers. I also think you can have a strong female character despite the any self-perceived weaknesses. For example, the superwoman wife, mother, career-woman can still be challenged to express herself creatively or undertake physical challenges.

I think women get the time to read romance same way they get the time to read any other book. If you don't read romance, why would you want to read them all day? :)

Before I start writing, I like to know several things about my characters beyond physical characteristics:

External motivation - or their goal for the story
Internal motivation - their personal goal
and a belief they have from when they were young that's shaped their whole world.
For example, my heroine's mother always relied on men to provide for her. My heroine has a hard time being independent because that's not what she grew up with.

ABBYSHARPE, I do not read romances. But I think it would be neat to use the imagination. I think it would be a challenge. I don't know where women get the time to read romances. I wish I could just read romances all day.

Do you use your personal imagination? How do you go about the process of writing a romance?

When I get a chance later, I can go through my books to find the title of the how-to book.

Why are you working while you're on vacation? Take some time!

What's the writing romance book? Did you look at it on Amazon to see if it has reviews and what the reviewers are saying?

The bigger question is if you read romance. Because if you don't, why would you want to write one?

Sounds neat! How on earth do you manage? This past summer, I went to a Habitat for Humanity store and looked at the used book section. There was a book explaining how to write romances. The book is still on my bookshelf, but I would really like to read. What do you think, read the book or just sit down with pen and paper?

About my work, 2 women commented on one of my reviews that they were tired of reviews. They want regular articles. So, I talked about it with my project manager. My project manager's boss e-mailed me to not let those 2 women bother me and to keep up the good work on the reviews that I do! Whew! Within the past two days, God has been good to me. Between my oral surgery follow-up being a success to my boss' boss giving my work a vote of confidence.

This is going to be a special Thanksgiving.

I'm not sure what you mean by writing online or print. Like, on a computer or by hand? For me it's on a computer all the way. I'm not sure I'd be doing this if I had to do it by hand.

I've been a romance reader since I was, what, 13? Always loved the genre. One day I read one and thought, I can write better than this! And so I tried. And boom! Here I am now.

ABBYSHARPE, how did you get your start in romance?

Thank you so much members for the activity!

Do most of you write on-line or print?

Keep up the good work.

A good topic to write about right now is pumpkin everything and anything. 5 of my pumpkin reviews went live today...everything from pumpkin pie milkshakes to pumpkin beauty tips.

My on-line women's magazine was wanting Halloween articles. However, I do not celebrate Halloween. Do you?

ABBYSHARPE, I often write YouTube reviews.

How are you? I hope good!

The weather is storming out. While having dinner, the light kept flickering. I want to be on Sparkpeople, so pray with me that the electric does not go out!

I made crockpot French toast for dinner with a side of pineapple. Too sweet. I have never allowed myself much sugar in life. Even as a child, I thought of sugar as a sin. So, now I know better.

Another too sweet thing is Brisk lemon iced tea. The Brisk has been on sale the past two weeks, so I bought some as a treat. I have learned my lesson. I have been drinking ice water now. I am on The Water Challenge Sparkteam after all! So, I am going to sell the Brisk to my roommates as they are used to drinking sugar. I will be drinking ice water and iced coffee and be happy!

Those are my 2 cents for today!

I am treating myself to Sparkpeople right now! Whew! I have completed 5 reviews for the on-line women's magazine today and need a little love!

How are you? I am froze. The weather is rain and the air conditioner is on. Very damp.

Well, I have books and magazines from the library to read. I am excited, but when am I going to have the time? LOL Everything on how to declutter, to making home soaps and lotions to Woman's World.

I had to shut off the window air unit. The weather is super freezing (to me anyway) and rain. I miss the sun!

I never get tired of hearing about other people's writings. Right now I am all about the dissertation. I have to make revision requests for the Review Board and I also have to start on other revisions for upcoming reviews.

I hate editing. At times I believe I would rather have a root canal.

Hello there folks!

I hope all of you are having success with your weight loss journey... whether with your fitness, nutrition or simply having Sparkpeople there for you when you need it. As for Sparkpeople, I know I can always get a boost of inspiration, motivation and/or a good kick in the butt, when I need it.

You are probably sick of me talking about my work. Writing and editing take up every spare minute that I have and are very important to me. Editing is kind-of boring, though. However, when I do the writing, it is like a free education. I learn so much. Lately, I have been doing many YouTube reviews. Do you know of any good girly YouTube videos?

I cannot wait to weigh myself next Tuesday! I am at 158 pounds and want to be 150 pounds. Kind-of still chunky, but not obese. I do not want to look anorexic. I want some meat on my bones. What do you think?

Have a super Friday! If you are going out tonight, be careful!

Keep Sparking,

I love free writing. Right now I am working on the book Dear Mom..... It's the 5 stages of grief through a personal perspective.
when or what.
I have thought about writing a fiction book but honestly don't know

As opposed to academic writing where everything is assigned, I love working with the freedom to choose whatever I choose to write about...

That was my first book The second book I see being a bit bigger. My dissertation is at 100K words and counting. Let me just say there is a huge difference between academic writing and personal writing for self-publishing. It is more stressful to write academically......in fact when I return to class tomorrow I will have an 8 week headache

Meanwhile, if I had to write only 63 pages, it would never happen. I'm usually in the 70K word range.

Just write. I had a professor from my Bible College days tell me once "Sometimes we are our worse obstacle. We doubt our own abilities and then sit in a pit of not-doing because we doubt ourselves. We allow negative Nellies to destroy our writing process. When the reality is, not everyone will like what we write, or love what we write. It doesn't matter. The key is just to write."

But I get it. I took 7 years to grow courage to write. How about we work on not taking that long"

Do you get my point though?

I would not even be able to come up with 63 pages...

Sorry...

Let me start by saying that a book does not have to be 300-400 pages. My first book is titled "When Humpty Shattered and the Hope among the Pieces" (pen name C. D. Cubb) and is only 63 pages. It is a look at serving God despite living through domestic violence. Book is available through Amazon and Westbow Press. This book took about a month to write. Of course I was in the middle of my doctorate classes for my PhD (hoping to finish dissertation by the end of the year for graduation).

I am always looking for opportunity to speak on this subject also.

My second book is a look at the 5 stages of grief in a book titled Dear Mom.....it will be a personal perspective letter to my mother on how I am surviving those stages.

I keep two journals....one with book ideas. My main journal is a prayer journal that I write thoughts in as the day goes along.

You are writing a book and that is not too shabby! I always ask myself...How do writers come up with all those pages in a book.... 300 pages, 400 pages, something I could NEVER do. You should be proud of yourself! What length of time has this taken you? Meaning, have you written other books? Quite an accomplishment!

Think of how far you have come. Do you keep a journal?

Certainly blog! Get some good motivational and inspirational feedback!

Write on!

Yesterday I started writing a 2nd book (first book explained in introduction thread). It is an emotional process for this book which causes me to emotionally eat. I have a goal of 40 pounds by Dec. 31 which my dr. says is realistic. I thought about daily blogging this journey on my sparkpage but then I wonder who will read it? I lack confidence some days in my writing but have had people tell me they like my writing.

How do you gain confidence?

How are you today?

I have been working super hard. Articles and side hustles... I was kind-of given a promotion at the website I am a contributing writer for. So, very excited and wanting to take on even more.

The side hustles have been taking up my Sparkpeople time. I have to do what I have to do. However, I do check in with the teams as often as I can.

For dinner today, I am serving leftover bow-tie pasta with meatballs. Frugal and filling. I am a carb-lover but watch my portion.

The weather has been so nice that all I want to do is sit outside! I do for about 20 minutes, then return to my desk.

Tonight is Mass on-line and either in-home walking or fitness pedal exercising.

If you have any good no-bake recipes, would you share the recipes with me? I need recipes that are easy and require barely any time to make.

Well, I will close for now. Be good!

Hello...

Yes. A workaholic Sunday, so thus a form letter. I hope you don't mind... If I didn't do anything at all, then you would think I did not give a darn, right? But, I do!

My pedometer average is not at what I would like, but for a full-time telecommuter working from home, what do you expect? I have activity by bedtime, but by then I crash and do not log it in. God knows my step average. Is he a member of Sparkpeople, by the way?

For dinner, today, I served mix n match skillet with grill cheese and a handful of corn chips. Doing yet another pantry challenge... I do watch portions. Yet, I cannot be too picky. With pantry challenges, you serve what you DO have available, although not as healthy as you would like.

I have not written a Sparkpeople in a good while. However, my Sparkpeople blogs are really not commented on. I guess I'm not interesting to members.

The weather is freezing here. I don't understand, April?

Well, be good and Spark for me!

emoticon Do you write at home or at an away location?

As I write at home, I often come up with difficulty in having the right food at the right time. As I usually don't eat breakfast, lunch just sails on by too. However, on Tuesday's I do treat myself to KFC as, again, a treat. If I do have anything for lunch any other day, it is usually a peanut butter sandwich.

Well, today, I broke down and made pasta salad. This way, if I am hungry, mission accomplished. What I would like to do is every day, is have some sort of salad available, such as potato salad, chicken salad, tuna salad and of course...pasta salad.

Do YOU have difficulty with eating, when you are supposed to eat, except you are writing? Salads are so versatile...any time a day, made with your favorite dressings and spices, handy for small meals in-between meals.

In "The Liar" by Nora Roberts she ended a chapter by the bad guy watching the two main characters with binoculars by saying, "Field glasses followed them through the trees and across the grass back to the cabin."

I pictured tiny binoculars with little feet running along behind them. She could have said, "His eyes, behind the field glasses, followed..." to make it clear.

Then, later, she told of two women entering a salon to get their hair done by saying, they came in to get hair.

Did the salon have baskets of different colored hair and the women came in to grab a handful of some blonde, some red, some brown...?

I read a book once where the heroine totaled her car,
Then drove said car somewhere,
then had a tow truck come for her car, which was in the original totaled location.

I had to reread to make sure I didn't miss something.

In "Curious Minds" by Janet Evanovich and Phoef Sutton:

Emerson hands Riley a gold bar. Two pages later he hands her the gold bar but she didn't return it to him. Hmm.

Bertie was sitting in his wheelchair on the eighteenth floor of the Blane-Grunwald building on Constitution Avenue. "The floor above the seventeenth floor."

Ya think?
*******
In "The Stranger" by Harlan Coben:

A father watches his son in college football tryouts and thinks if the boy can beat a time of 5.2 seconds in the forty-yard dash that he'd be a shoo in for a big name school. "If a prospect slower than that..."

Isn't a word missing there?
*******
In "Gray Mountain" by John Grisham:

Samatha thinks about going back to sleep but "The coffee was ready, the aroma drifting from the other room."

Except, she is alone, did not make coffee then go back to bed, and did not preset the coffeepot the night before.

Sooo, what ghost made the coffee?

Jail and prison vans have no windows to avoid a prisoner being shot.

Yet, in David Baldacci's "The Guilty" page 114 describes a scene where the hero sees the van transporting his arrested father.

"The prison van was coming around the corner. The sole passenger was Dan Robie." How could his son, the hero, know that?

"He was shackled to the last seat." Again, how would that have been known?

Oh, I love PostSecret. I haven't swung by in ages though. Thanks for the reminder!

I had a pretty decent weekend :) It was a busy one, because I'd accidentally double-booked myself on Saturday, but it all worked out. One of the things I went to was a performance of A Christmas Carol at the local theater. They did a fantastic job!

Define juicy. Remember, I write romance. ;)

If you're looking for something to spark (hee hee, see what I did there?) ideas, I recommend postsecret.com ( postsecret.com/ ) but be warned - sometimes there's graphic language and maybe some nudity. But don't let that stop you, because it's not gratuitous.

How is my driving? As I telecommute for everything basically, you would probably say too slow! :)

Is there anything pertaining to writing that you want for Christmas?

Is there anything that you do NOT want for Christmas?

Have you written anything juicy lately? C'mon, give us the details!

Have any of you written for magazines? Now I would find that very cool.

I hope your weekend was good. Talk again soon!

I hope all of you are having a productive day and that your writing goes smoothly.

I completely forgot last month to submit an article to the religious newspaper that I volunteer for. I just realized this yesterday... Whoops... I guess I will go through my Twitter feed to see if any tweets spark some ideas for a topic. Luckily, I had some submissions turned in a couple monthes ago not published yet that will cover me. I guess they came in handy!

Well, I think all of you are emoticon

More proofreading humor:

There are numerous errors in Robert B. Parker's book "Slow Burn" written by Ace Akins after Parker's death.

Two of the funniest both involve donuts.

In one scene the three bad guys are eating donuts in a pastry shop. Big Ray scratched his nose and looked down at the empty box (of donuts). "Can I have that last one?"

Must have been an invisible donut. emoticon

In the second donut scene, the two good guys are doing surveillance and have a box of donuts with them. One guy grabbed a cinnamon sugar donut, his partner took a coconut one. That left 10 donuts in the box.

The partner took another donut, leaving nine. The first good guy ate a second one, leaving eight. He asks his partner, who has eaten two donuts, "Only one? He nodded at the box with 10 left.

Nothing was said about a baker's dozen of 13. Someone couldn't count and someone didn't edit properly. Duh!

Busy weekend for me, too. And the first of family gift-giving on the hubby's side. I won't be seeing my family until the end of Dec, but I keep thinking - ack, I haven't yet gotten my sister a gift! And then I calm down because I have two more weeks. :)

I am looking forward to the weekend. It's been a good week, but a busy one. I have a busy weekend too, though *lol*

Hello all you wonderful Sparkfriends!

Well, I have yet one more chief editor job to do! I am excited as this position covers the topic of dieting. Wish me luck! I will be busy today doing research for my first article! Once the job matures, I will have writers working for me that apply. So, for right now, it will be a one-woman show.

I had a terrible nightmare overnight. I never have good dreams. Why cannot I have good dreams?

I have a book loaned from the library named "The Step Diet". I am very eager to read it. Obviously, it is about counting steps instead of counting calories.

Having problems with money for this Christmas? Go on Pinterest and look up "Dollar Tree Gifts"! So many cute ideas!

Well, this is my 2 cents worth for the day. I hope you are Sparking and remember...Santa is watching!

That, sound really frightening emoticon

Is there any way to get someone else who can back you up? Sorry, I have no useful advice :( That just really sucks, though. Winter driving is tricky enough as it is!

Hello! How are you today? I hope well!

Well, so far I have published an article today and am pleased. Now I can play with you on Sparkpeople for a little while!

Earlier this week, I bought bunches of broccoli on clearance for 49 cents a bunch. I am in the mood for broccoli cheese soup in the crockpot! So, I will attempt to get to a store to get a block of Velveeta today.

It is December 1 and there has only been 1 snowfall here. I thank God!

I am making snowman soup for little Christmas gifts. I used coupons for Swiss Miss hot cocoa and Kraft marshmellows at Dollar Tree. So far, I have enough for about 24 baggies to give and paid less than $10.00 for everything, you figure: hot cocoa, marshmellows, baggies, ribbon. The candy canes I already had as bought on Christmas clearance LAST YEAR!!!!! I may be poor but I have the Christmas spirit.

I am still a little shook up over the van driver I rely on this past Tuesday. He almost wrecked the van twice. He always drives wrecklessly but this time it was the last straw. Nobody believes me. What do I do when it DOES snow and there are icy conditions? See where I am getting?

My pedometer is faithfully on my show. Wherever I go, it is there!

Well, be good!

I am happy to return to the team. I guess I needed a little break. It is so nice seeing Sparkfriends being active!

What are all of you working on today? I need to work on an article about getting in those 10,000 steps a day were are suppose to get in.

Hello all! I was hoping to come here for some writing, health, and fitness motivation and accountability. But this group doesn't have a team leader and doesn't seem to be very active at the moment.
I would be interested in becoming the team leader if there are some people interested in keeping this group going.
