Dear me, 2016

Well, I suppose you're getting ready for Yule and Christmas. Tiny must be 8 1/2 by now; not so Tiny anymore! I hope he's still as joyful for you as he has been for me; a little genius child, and so loving! I know your biggest worry is that you will screw him up as your parents have screwed up you; I'm sure you won't, and by now, maybe you're even starting to trust that.

I'm interested to know if you have found love, yet. If you know what it means. It puzzles me; after 6 years and two serious relationships, I know a few things about conflict resolution, communication, marriage and living together but still surprisingly little about love. What is it? How do I know if it's real? How do I tell between a genuine mistake from a loving person, and a clever lie from an abuser? Do you know, future me?

How is your book coming along? Have you finished the Auruan series yet? We've been working on that SOB for 10 years now; we really should finish it up some day. Or maybe you've given up on the old beast and moved on to something new. Are you published yet? I'm sure you're waiting to hear back from someone; we always are. I'll be interested in whether you have beaten me to it, or if I'll catch up with you.

And then of course, there's the weightloss. I'm working on shifting those stubborn lb's for you; please tell me you're keeping them off, and looking after yourself! I know I have given you a few more scars recently, and I'm sorry you will have to look after them, now. But I hope you can forgive me; I'll be better to myself in the future, and will try not to do it anymore.

I hope things are better for you when you receive this letter than they are for me now, writing them.

Kind regards,

You, age 23.

Just because you have been through the rain of life doesn't mean I have to walk around in wet clothes forever; there is a warm towel, a big hug, and a mug of low fat cocoa waiting for you somewhere!

Just reminded me of a great song, and I don't even listen to a lot of Country music. :)

If I could write a letter to me
And send it back in time to myself at 17
First I'd prove it's me by saying look under your bed
There's a Skoal can and a Playboy no one else would know you hid
And then I'd say I know it's tough
When you break up after seven months
And yeah I know you really liked her and it just don't seem fair
All I can say is pain like that is fast and it's rare

And oh you got so much going for you going right
But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
She wasn't right for you
And still you feel like there's a knife sticking out of your back
And you're wondering if you'll survive
You'll make it through this and you'll see
You're still around to write this letter to me

At the stop sign at Tomlinson and Eighth
Always stop completely don't just tap your breaks
And when you get a date with Bridgett make sure the tank is full
On second thought forget it that one turns out kinda cool
Each and every time you have a fight
Just assume you're wrong and dad is right
And you should really thank Mrs. Brinkman
She spent so much extra time
It's like she sees the diamond underneath
And she's polishin' you 'til you shine

And oh you got so much going for you going right
But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
Tonight's the bonfire rally
But you're staying home instead because if you fail Algebra
Mom and dad will kill you dead
Trust me you'll squeak by and get a C
And you're still around to write this letter to me

You've got so much up ahead
You'll make new friends
You should see your kids and wife
And I'd end by saying have no fear
These are nowhere near the best years of your life

I guess I'll see you in the mirror
When you're a grown man
P.S. go hug Aunt Rita every chance you can

And oh you got so much going for you going right
But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
I wish you'd study Spanish
I wish you'd take a typing class
I wish you wouldn't worry, let it be
I'd say have a little faith and you'll see

If I could write a letter to me
To me

"Nobody important? Blimey, that's amazing...in 900 years of time and space I have never met anyone who wasn't important before."

I recently took a SparkLive class and the Spark leader suggested writing a letter to your future self. I did that with my blog today. It is very uplifting when you see yourself in the future with your goals met. I challenge you to write a letter to yourself in the future. Please post here if have done that in the past or am doing it now so we can all go to your page and read it. It is interesting what comes out when you write that letter.
