wow, this is an old post... but seeing as Halloween is coming up soon, why not bring this to the surface... Halloween this year is on a Thursday. The Saturday before we're going on a horror walk through a camp ground in which all the campers put on huge and elaborate decorations and hand out a little candy. And yes, we'll be dressing up. I might be a witch or something Steampunk, my daughter is gonna be a witch, I think my other daughter is gonna be a corpse bride, my son wants to be Link (from the Zelda games) and my husband will be a wizard. My older son and his girlfriend are looking into something Steampunk as well.

We love Halloween... I used to hand out candy and take my kids trick or treating, as they got older we go into the trunk or treating at church... and then as they outgrew that we found out about the horror walk at the campground.

Halloween is too much fun to ignore!! :)

I hope y'all have a Happy one. :) emoticon

awesome thread! well my parents so we wouldnt stick out let us stay for the school halloween parties but we were NOT allowed to trick or treat and were not allowed to have jack o laterns and things of that nature. dad is VERY against halloween. i for the other hand dont mind it as long as its just fun costumes and no witch craft or devil worship is involved. and most kids arent dressing up for satan lol, just for good old fun. i will be honest though i dont like witch costumes or anything harry potter but i dont mind pretty much anything else. ghosts that type of thing im fine with. i think trick or treating and dressing up scary or funny or pretty or whatever is cool. :)

So I'm just curious... I know we're all alternative, but I also know we're all Christians... I was wondering if you guys will be celebrating Halloween this Friday, and if so, what you do. Do you go to parties or festivals? Do you take any kids trick-or-treating or indulge the kid in you and trick-or-treat yourself? Did you grow up in a household where Halloween was frowned upon, or was it openly accepted?

I did not grow up in a Christian home, and my parents were very liberal, so Halloween was never denied. The scarier the better, as a matter of fact. We've always celebrated Halloween and my kids (11 and 5) love it too. Now, I don't insist that they dress up scary, although of course my 11 year old is automatically drawn to the scarier costumes. My 5 year old on the other hand... well... he'll be Darth Vader this year, while the older one will be a grim reaper-looking thing. We like to go trick-or-treating, and what we do is hand out little tracts at all the houses as well as to any of the kids that come to the door. I print out the Pumpkin Parable on a little blank business card and the kids hand em out. However, trick or treating can get exhausting to little legs, so for the last couple of years we've been going to festivals. My kids enjoy it so much more because they're not just walking around door-to-door collecting candy. There's games, pony rides, dunk tanks, snacks and drinks, bounce houses, and opportunities to win candy. They're ususally over by 8pm, too, so if it's not a school night (like this year) we stil have time to trick or treat, if they still feel up to it. We'll even go to the rich neighborhoods where they hand out the big expensive candy bars (like Godiva... mmmmm) and give out our little tracts, because sometimes I feel like rich people are further from Jesus than the poor folks. Just my way to use a secular holiday for ministry. When in Rome, right?

So what do you do? Got anything planned yet? What special memories do you have as a kid, whether you celebrated it or not? Do you use this as an oportunity to witness in any way?
