That is exactly what I have been noticing about myself. Mindless drinking. I also had to have a glass while cooking dinner, eating dinner, after dinner.......so I am having club soda or tonic water (diet) while making dinner. A glass with dinner if so inclined, and tea after dinner. I am starting a new journal and calendar, inspired by many of you. Thank you for all the great ideas and support that is here.

A variation on this idea that I do is to buy the tetra pack of wine at the store which equals three glasses. This way if I have a night that I want to drink I can be sure I don't over indulge with a whole bottle.

Excellent tip!
I used to feel I couldn’t cook dinner without a glass of wine nearby but now I keep the glass in the other room near the tv (usually I catch up on the news on while I cook) and just go for the occasional sip and drink water or club soda in the kitchen.

I realized just the other day that when I have my evening cocktail - which is usually wine or beer - I hang on to the glass. So, I am drinking mindlessly. This week, I concentrated on putting down the glass after I take a sip. You know what? I drank less!

Today, I gave myself permission to not finish a drink. When my husband and I were in college and then just starting out, our rule was to never leave a beer unfinished. I think subconciously, I have still been following that rule, so, this week, I am going to concentrate on that. If I am full or I am finished, anything left will be poured out.

So my new mantra is put it down and pour it out.
