Stevia has been used for many thousands of yrs. It's release was delayed for a long time because of people wanting to stifle its availability.Certain brands are more userfriendl;y than others. I like certain special ones mixed with Greek yogurt or Ricotta with cereals, etc.
I have used agave syrup on Pancakes. Worked great. I don't need to sweeten many things, and use so little, it isn't a priority in my thoughts.

Cinnamon has a great feature of helping clean one's
mouth.

Stevia scares me a little bit. There are still concerns that it interferes with metabolism and the absorption of carbs, can cause reproductive problems and genetic mutations. Ummm...no thanks. lol Yacon is low calorie, low glycemic, and studies show (I quote) that "daily intake of yacon syrup produced a significant decrease in body weight, waist circumference and body mass index." Now, that may be for people who consumed a lot of sugar before. Anyway, the article in E Magazine, March/April 2010, was very informative if you want to read it. I haven't noticed an aftertaste. I use about a teaspoon in my coffee.

If you do try it in baking, let me know your substitution ratios! :)

Hi! Some people have no prob with Stevia, and some brands work better than others, and formulas are improved. I like a few drop of vanilla creme in Greek yogurt with fruits or cereal. will try Yacon. I love cinnamon mixed with a teense of stevia powder.

I would be interested in trying yacon syrup and see how I metabolize it. My concern would be if there's that funky aftertaste that so commonly happens with stevia.

It's a syrup made from a root vegetable that has a natural sweetness to it. You buy it in a little jar next to sugar, honey and other sweeteners. I read an article in E Magazine all about natural sweeteners and yacon syrup was touted as being the best for those trying to lose weight. It's also minimally processed, completely natural, etc. I use it in coffee and I've also baked with it once. That recipe turned out well, so I'm going to be experimenting with more. It's all about getting the quantity right!

Not only does cinnamon taste good there is clinical evidence that it can improve insulin resistance.

Just to add one more thing: you can also try using yacon syrup instead of sugar. Completely natural, fewer calories, known to be a favourite among those trying to lose weight.

Thanks for the great idea. I've been struggling with this issue. I really like things to taste sweet, but I don't need the calories of real sugar or the artificial ingredients in artificial sweeteners. I hadn't thought about gradually reducing the sugar I use and replacing it with cinnamon, which I love. I'm going to start today by reducing the sugar I put in my coffee by 1/4 tsp.

Many years ago I knew of a woman who wanted to quit smoking. She had read that using a stick of cinnamon to put in her mouth to simulate a cigarette would help with the craving. For several months she walked around with a cinnamon stick in her mouth, and once in a while she'd hold it like she was smoking it. I'm not sure how much of an impact that had on her quitting success but she never smoked again.
I must kick sugar as a baking ingredient altogether now, as I find that any kind of added sugar makes me angrier and also be more impatient with the world at large. I don't like swearing, but when I have sugar, hoo boy out come the language demons!
Sugar in and of itself is NOT bad. It's a form of energy, and we need this instant kind of energy at times during the day. The body is better off, however, metabolizing sugar from the food we eat, not sugar in its "self" form.

You're so right! I have an awful sweet tooth that I'm trying to gradually curb. I love cinnamon, and this is a great idea. I will try it in oatmeal tomorrow. Bananas are also a great one!

I like cinnamon and/or vanilla in oatmeal and it helps to eliminate the need for sugar. I like cinnamon in my coffee -- but only the stick, not the powder. I'll have to see if I can reduce my sweet need with coffee . .

Many of us are addicted to sweetness even though we know sugar is bad. Many of us have used sugar substitutes like Splenda to stay "healthy" and still satisfy our sweet-tooth. This only perpetuates our sweetness addiction. Instead replace the sugar with some cinnamon. At first the food will not be sweet enough for you. But over time(3-4 months) as your sweet-tooth shrinks you will find you never really needed all the sweetness in the first place.
